Assuming Win7 (64-bit) SP1...
Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:
1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?
1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade the computer to Win7?
1c. Did you recently have occcasion to do a Repair Install or a clean install of Windows for some reason?
2. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
5. Are ALL of the following updates listed in View installed updates (not Update History)? [1]
(a) KB2870699, KB2876315 & KB2872339;
(b) KB2868623; KB2804579, KB2839894 & KB2830290;
(c) KB2813347, KB2840149 & KB2807986;
(d) KB2790113; KB2676562 & KB2644615.
6. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 7 Update 25 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
7. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.8.800.168 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
8a. Is IE9 or IE10 installed?
8b. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?
9. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?

- a. I purchased my ASUS laptop approximately in January 2011. (b) Windows 7 - 64-bit came pre installed on my lap top. (c) I didn't do a repair install, but I did do a Startup Repair using the steps in this forum- http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html - I'm not sure if that is the same thing, but it has enabled me to get passed the reboot loop that I was in. Only problem is that every time I shut off my computer, I have to do that same steps again or the loop will continue. - This is when it was brought to my attention that maybe some important updates have failed and that I might just need to install them manually.
- AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2013 is the anti-virus application that I installed right after I bought the lap top. There have been no issues for the past 2 years. This is the only antivirus application that I have installed.
- Neither McAfee nor Norton were installed after I bought it. McAfee was preinstalled.
- I believe a McAfee application was preinstalled on my lap top and every now and then I'll see an update for it. But, however, I did install AVG Free Security right after I bought my lap top and installed it. It has never, for the past 2 years, given me problems.
- I have 286 updates installed so how far back am I looking? Am I looking through ALL of them?
- Yes, I currently have Java 7 update 40
- I have Adobe Flash Player v11.8.800.168 installed
- IE10 is installed
- As I said before, the only thing I've had to use in my lap tops system was the Startup Repair using the steps at the previously mentioned forum

I'm sorry, I don't know what a store tamper is. But ALL day today I've been leaving my computer on and trying to install the .NET updates. But I don't remember anything happening at 10:31. But, I will run a malware scan to see if it picks anything up.

1. Did you (a) uninstall the McAfee free-trialware AND THEN (b) download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed AVG Free?
2. Can you tell me the Created date of C:\Program Files\AVG <=this folder?
3. When (exact date, preferably) did you do the Startup Repair (AKA repair install; AKA in-place upgrade)?
4. I do need you to answer #5 in my previous post, please. You can add an Date Installed column to the Installed Updates window then click on the column header such the the most-recently installed updates are at the top or bottom of the list - or you can use the Search box (upper right) and search for each KB number.

- I didn't install McAfee at all, it was preinstalled on my laptop. AVG is the only security that I have installed since I bought it. This is how the sequence of events were: I bought my lap top and set it up in one day. The next day, I downloaded AVG Antivirus Free Edition.
- The Created date of the AVG 2013 folder is September 12, 2013. There is not record of previous versions. I checked.
- I started using the Startup Repair about 2 days ago, and have been since then.
- I've researched for those installed updates and I have found some of them on my lap top. They are: (b) KB2868623, KB2804579, KB2839894, KB2830290, (c) KB2813347, KB2840149, KB2807986, and (d) KB2790113, KB2676562, KB2644615. - I couldn't find your (a) update choices though. I searched the whole computer and they still didn't come up.
By the way, thanks for helping me on this problem. And just FYI, I don't really need the programs or folders on my lap top, so if it comes down to deleting them, then we'll just have to delete them. But, it would be nice if I could keep at least some of them. But I'm up for anything just to get my lap top back up and running.

I didn't install McAfee at all, it was preinstalled on my laptop...
You may not have Activated (used) the McAfee free-trial but it was installed by the computer manufacturer. You should have fully-removed it before you installed AVG the first time and before you installed it again on 12 September (i.e., after doing the Startup Repair).
I may have a fix for you but I still need to know if Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate brower is installed?

Roll up your sleeves, cross your fingers & try the following multi-step fix I've cooked-up just for your computer...
ACTIONS
[You will want to print these instructions for offline reference. IMPORTANT => DON'T SKIP ANY STEP & perform all steps in one, uninterrupted session! If a step says to reboot, reboot!]
1. Right-click on the following link, select SAVE TARGET AS... & download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).
3. Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above and select Run as Administrator to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.
4. Re-assert Internet Explorer as the default Browser in the CUSTOM (<=important!) section of Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. [1]
5a. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop: http://www.slipstick.com/doit/chromehtml.reg [2]
5b. Double-click on the file you saved in #5a above & accept the prompt to MERGE the data with the Registry.
6. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 [ignore any DOES NOT APPLY warnings as well as the APPLIES TO section] & run the Fix It.
Note=> For optimal results, check the Delete personal settings option.
7a. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336 [ignore the title & Symptoms].
7b. IMPORTANT! => Dismiss/close the Windows Update troubleshooter pop-up! - then...
7c. Ignoring any "Not recommended" or similar warnings, run Fix It 50202 in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [3]
8. Reboot again.
9. Run a manual check for updates & see if all security-related updates (e.g., KB2870699, KB2876315, KB2478662, KB2446710 & KB2872339) will successfully install.
