System Interrupts Causing Performance Problems

I am having performance degradation after a random amount of time running my machine.  Generally, I notice during video playback that the sound becomes full of static and the video playback choppy.  The resources monitor indicates that during these times a large portion of the CPU (20% or so) is being used by system interrupts.  The problem resolves after restart, but recurs regularly.

I ran xperf during one of the periods where interrupts were high and the results can be found at these links:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4354933128_242f11be0f_b.jpg

As can be seen, the CPU is being occupied by USBPort.sys.  The interrupts are being generated by hal.dll, dxgkml.sys and USBPort.sys

I am running a gateway sx2802.  I've added a wireless card as well as an ATI Radeon 4550 graphics card, which I have connected to a receiver with an HDMI cable.  I am running windows 7.  The only USB device I am using is a wireless logitech keyboard.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

Hi,

To optimize Windows performance, try using the Performance troubleshooter to automatically find and fix problems. The Performance troubleshooter checks issues that might slow down your computer's performance, such as how many users are currently logged on to the computer and whether multiple programs are running at the same time.

To run the troubleshooter:

• Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

• In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.
• Under System and Security, click Check for performance issues.

You can also use advanced tools to troubleshoot performance problems in Windows 7.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Performance-troubleshooter

• To get to the tools, type Performance Info into the search box in the Start menu and hit Enter.
• In the Performance Information and Tools windows click on Advanced Tools.
• It opens up a list of different tools you can use to monitor different aspects of the system performance. From here you can do several things like defrag the hard drive, check Event Viewer, and even re-rate the Experience Index score.
• Notice there is a column for Performance issues you can click on to get additional details on how to correct the problem.
• Resource Monitor is a great tool to monitor what applications and services are using up your system’s memory, processor, disk usage, and network activity. If you find a service or program that is frozen or taking up too many resources you can close it out.
• You can even generate a system health report. With the help of this you can go through a very detailed analysis of virtually every aspect of your system.

Thanks Suuresh,

I believe I have already identified the issue.  The occurrence of the performance issues is correlated with high CPU usage by system interrupts, which appear to be generated by USBPort.sys and hal.dll.  Can you recommend a specific fix?

Peter - Can you please tell me the hardware ID for one of the USB controllers in your machine?

The hotfix in this thread may address your issue - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/38f25c1d-de67-4c74-8845-2cd3a15d8e41/

Mark

Thanks Mark,

The Hardware ID for the "Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3A3A" is as follows:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A3A&SUBSYS_02501025&REV_00
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A3A&SUBSYS_02501025
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A3A&CC_0C0320
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A3A&CC_0C03

I will install the hotfix and let you know if the problem recurs.  I do not believe there are any Nvidia components in my system, but hopefully it will work.

I have applied the hotfix but the problem persists.

There is an additional symptom - when I leave the computer on for a period of time after the system interrupts begin, I get a blue screen crash and when the system recovers I get the following error message:

"Problem Event Name:    BlueScreen
  OS Version:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
  Locale ID:    1033

Additional information about the problem:
  BCCode:    124
  BCP1:    0000000000000000
  BCP2:    FFFFFA8006652028
  BCP3:    00000000F2000040
  BCP4:    0000000000000800
  OS Version:    6_1_7600
  Service Pack:    0_0
  Product:    256_1

Files that help describe the problem:
  C:\Windows\Minidump\030810-15241-01.dmp
  C:\Users\Pete\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-28095-0.sysdata.xml"

Does this shed any light on the issue?

I disabled onboard USB in the bios and installed a PCI-E USB card.  The system interrupts/stuttering problem appears to have resolved itself.  I'll update this post if the problem recurs.

Not an ideal solution as I am losing the use of multiple USB ports and the only PCI-E slot the system has.

I have the same Gateway sx2802 with ATI 4550 installed with USB wireless Microsoft 5000 keyboard/mouse and found the problem with stuttering stopped after going back to the wired factory original keyboard and mouse. USB transfer rates to external hard drives has always seemed slow as well.

I had the same problem, and i updated all my drivers with driver scanner + did a registry mechanic scan and fix but it did not work. Then i just plugged my usb stick into the back USB instead of the front and it fixed it :S

DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2, 3100 MHz (15.5 x 200) 6000+

Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3

RAM:5118 MB

So it seems like a windows 7 problem, sine its happening on diffrent motherboards.

Hi,

make a xperf trace [1] to diagnostic the Interrups issues. Please upload the etl file to your SkyDrive [2] and post a link here.

I'll take a look at it.
