Windows 10 cannot find wireless devices on this PC

My laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook LH531) automatically updates Windows patches from Microsoft. Last night my laptop downloaded and installed the latest patches (Aug 5, 2016). This morning I booted up the laptop. It locked up serveral times. Finally when it booted without lockup I noticed the Wireless icon in the bottom right corner had an X drawn through it. I clicked on it and the only option was the Airplane mode. No other wireless connections were there.

1) I tried using an ethernet cable and connecting directly to the wireless modem (the latest Xfinity modem). Nothing. Could not connect to the internet

2) Since I had recently cleaned the registry with CCleaner (a tool I have been using for more than 10 years without a single problem), I reloaded the saved changes back into the registry using the CCleaner software. Nothing changed. Still cannot connect and still no wireless devices seen by the pc.

3) I opened the device manager. I found the wireless. I found Network Adapters. Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. Device status reads, "this device is working properly".  Since the PC cannot connect to the internet I cannot update the driver software.

4) Under power management of same, I unchecked Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. I hit the OK button, closed the device manager and rebooted the PC. No changes. Still, no wireless devices seen by this PC.

5) Under Network Adapters there is a second device - Realtek PCle GBE Family Controller. Again, "this device is working properly".  Also, unchecked the box for Allow computer to turn off this device to save power. Again, reboot. Result was no changes - No wireless devices seen by this PC.

6) I tried finding the latest patch to see if I could uninstall them. I opened the Settings file. Clicked on the "Update and Security button. The settings file closes. I've tried numerous times and same result each time.

7) Back to Device Manager: Opened System Devices. There is nothing in there that says anything about a wireless device. Is there supposed to be? I found NDIS Virtual Network Adapter Enumerator. That is the only line that had anything either "Network" or "Wireless"

8) Notes: My battery is dead so I run directly from the cord adapter.  I never had a problem before.

So, I understand this is a problem with many MS Windows 10 users. I wish I had never "upgraded" from a prefectly fine Windows 7. Incidentally, I am using a Windows 8 laptop to write this. This is something I blame Microsoft for. I was an engieering manager in the semiconductor tool business for a long time. Anyway, what is the "FIX"? I've spent hours on this and nothing works. Anyone have any ideas? And please, don't say I should go to the Fujitsu website and download new drivers like a lot of "experts" on YouTube. If you cannot connect, how are you supposed to visit any website?

Thanks for the fast response. I did as recommended above. Opened and ran Network Troubleshooting as administrator. I got, "Troubleshooting Couldn't Identify the Problem" as the response. Any other ideas? The device manager sees the network card and says it's working fine. But the PC sees nothing in the way of a network device. What's the next step?

I'd recommend that you go to the Device Manager and "uninstall" the wireless adapter... then wait a few seconds...  and then reboot.

Since something apparently has happened to the hardwired Ethernet, you might consider uninstalling that one too

I need more explanation before I uninstall the wireless adapter. It sounds risky. How would I reinstall it if there is a corrupted file? I cannot connect to the internet on that PC.

The "fix" the MS engineer above linked to stated something about an outdated Cisco VPN and that was the reason for my problems.  Here is another website with exactly the same "fix".  I'm not a software engineer. I was a chemical engineer - completely different. Please explain why I want to do this and what happens if this doesn't work? What are my options then?

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you change the registry incorrectly. Before you change it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

To fix this issue, Microsoft has created a troubleshooter.

To fix this issue automatically, follow these steps:

  1. Download the Troubleshooter.

Note If the computer does not have an Internet connection, download the troubleshooter, save it to a removable disk, and then copy it to the computer.
  2. When you are prompted, select Open.

Note If you are prompted with a security warning, select Yes to start the troubleshooter.
  3. In the window that opens, follow the instructions to run the troubleshooter.

To fix this issue manually, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then type command prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then select Run as administrator,
  3. Run the following commands:

    reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3} /f

    netcfg -v -u dni_dne

Note If the resolution in this article did not fix your issue, or if you received error message when performing the steps, contact Microsoft Support.

Do I put the old registry file on a different computer?  Anything else?

It's normally safe to uninstall a device, since it will be detected again on the next reboot (sometime almost immediately).  The detection routine will also re-install the most appropriate driver that it can find on your system.

So, had you been using a 3rd-part VPN client?

The troubleshooter is typically very good and not messing anything else up.  In fact, it is often so conservative that it doesn't find anything wrong.

I use whatever came with the laptop. I did not install any additional hardware.

I'm about to uninstall the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter - which is what came with the laptop back in 2011 when I bought this. The driver was last updated on 5/11/15, version 10.0.0.315

Before I do this, -- thinking out loud, what happens to the device software? Let me assume nothing. I am leaving the check box to delete the driver software for this device unchecked.

I deleted the Qualcomm adapter.

So, upon restarting:

Network icon in bottom right corner still has a X through it. Only option is airplane mode.

Devie manager: Shows the Qualcomm adapter and working properly

It appears nothing has changed.

So, did you also try the Troubleshooter?  (I would assume that you did, and it had no effect?)

I am about to do that now.

I downloaded the Windows 10 version of their Troubleshooter (Appsdiagnostic10) onto a thumb drive, transferred it to the Windows 10 laptop, ran the software and got the following message, "Sorry, this troubleshooter doesn't work with this version of Windows". Hmmm.  Guess I need a troubleshooter for the troubleshooter.

Ok, now going to try to make changes manually, as per the instructions.

reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3} /f

After trying to run the above, I got the following message: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

I have noticed my Office 2010 no longer works. And iTunes no longer works.

Hmmm. Maybe just buy a copy of Windows 7 and reformat the beast?
