Error: The UID of a message changed unexpectedly

One of my Outlook installs is giving a very cryptic error message. Apparently, according to this thread the server and the client are calculating different UIDs and the recommended solution is to delete account, reboot, re-add the account. That is OK I guess but it avoids the actual cause of the problem. How does the client get to the a point where it is calculating the UIDs incorrectly. Also, I'm not comfortable with merely deleting the account. Even though IMAP is supposedly only pulling from the server the account has messages going back to 2010 so somehow Outlook is retaining all those emails and I don't want to lose them. I'm not entirely comfortable deleting the account and risking losing the years back log of emails that I'm almost certain are no longer on the server. Does anyone have any more useful advice than to delete and re-create the account?

Anyways here is the error message, I replaced the server info with asterices:

The UID of a message changed unexpectedly. This typically indicates a server bug. Your program may not function properly after this.

Hi Aaron,

This behavior occurs because the UID that is generated by the server gave a previous UID number, when it should have used the next one. As of now the only option is to remove and re-add the account.

Two observations:

1. Your link is broken. Try it for yourself.

2. Your response doesn't really address my primary concern. I hate to repeat myself when you can just scroll up a few inches but to reiterate I'm already aware of deleting and recreating the account as a fix and I don't find that satisfactory because I have a massive amount of accumulated emails going back to 2010.

I'm having the same issue.  We have three offices in 3 different states and ALL 3 of us are having this same error message.  MS can't convince me this happens at the same time at 3 different locations.  There MUST be an explanation, like Aaron above said, of why this occurred and how to fix it without deleting and reinstalling the account.  Logically, to me, when it says the server that means something MS is controlling.  If so many of us are receiving this error message, then this is a problem the MS Techs that should be resolving and not making all of us go through the delete, loose all your messages, and reinstall.

What does UID stand for?
