Upgrade to build 14931 gets stuck in a reboot loop

I left my PC upgrading to 14931 from the previous build. Came back after a couple of hours, and it is stuck in a reboot loop.

Gets past the BIOS, shows the windows logo, blanks the screen, shows the logo again, and then says Restarting

Not sure how far in the process it got.

This is on a Dell M6700.

I have backups, but going to do a reinstallation of the Anniversary Edition from scratch onto a new drive and then try again. This PC has been on the fast ring since the start, so has seen a lot of updates...

If you preserve a copy of your 14931 ESD file from the failed upgrade, it could save you having to download it again.  You can create a bootable USB from that file or an ISO for installing to your new drive, rather than having to uograde from the public build.  But if you have fast Internet, the 3GB+ download part may be a non-issue to you.

I have a similar issue - also been on the fast ring since the start.

The system tries to re-install the previous release, which fails, and it then reboots and tries again.

I am willing to re-install the system and re-install every other applications. I believe that is my only option. I downloaded the latest media and created a USB boot disk, and it only gives me the option to re-install. It cannot repair the build.

The problem I have is that my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro didn't come with a Windows 8.1 license code, and I therefore do not have a code to use to install a fresh release.

What are my options?

As long as you have had a Insider Preview of Win 10 installed on your Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro before and it had been Activated. You can just reinstall any version that is not expired and it will work.

Wouldn't a re-install completely re-format my drive, and therefore my prior activation will be gone?

Activation of Windows 10 is for your device so is not dependant on anything stored on the hard drive.  Your Lenovo has a Digital License for Windows 10 if it is activated.  Even if you replace the hard disk entirely, if you reinstall the same Edition (Home or Pro, etc.) of Windows 10 and use no Product Key, once it connects to the Internet it will auto-activate Windows 10.  You should be able to see this status on your Activation screen in Settings.

Which Edition of Windows 10 Insider Preview is currently activated, Home or Pro?

If it came with Windows 8.1 Home and you have been running activated Windows 10 Pro all along (that was originally activated with an Insider Preview Product Key before Digital Entitlement came in) there is a chance that a clean install might think that you should have Windows 10 Home and install that, if Home is included on your install media.  If Windows 10 Home has never been activated on that PC, it could be an issue.

If you want to prove that a fresh install of Windows 10 will auto-activate, you could shrink drive C: by 20-64GB and install Windows 10 from your bootable USB (choosing Custom install) to the unpartitioned space created.  Skip any request for a Product Key.  This will create a dual-boot setup and you can see if it auto-activates.

If your Lenovo came with Windows 8.1, the Product Key is stored in BIOS memory and can be read, but you should not need it.

When I upgraded to 14931 it appeared to go well however, when completed I could not use as I was not able to provide my Pin as there was no key-pad. Found it necessary to. Reformat my Nokia 735 from scratch. Beware !

Yes, but for PC's there are other login options that phones don't have.  I did read that some phones had this issue.

The clean install worked. Left it running on the Anniversary Update for a few days, and just now upgraded successfully to 14931.

Still don't know what caused the original problem, but fortunately can access the old SSD via USB.
