I also found it odd that they would make the Knight's Templar exist in modern times.
But whatever, that's the cool part about fiction, you can do whatever the hell you please.

First, I'm sorry for the wall of text, I'm currently using Googe Chrome these Forums don't seem to agree with my IE.
The Templars do exist to this day, but not like AC portrays. The Free Masons are essentially the Knights Templar, but they just ain't so damn cool. Like the Free Masons, Abstergo are a form of Templar, but not Templars in the full sense.
While Sable was the leader of the Templars, in reality he actually died in 1193. In the game it is explained that the Templars rewrote history. Now, history tells us that they then elected another Grand Master (Gilbert Horal) and continued until 1312 when they were "disbanded". As we know many of the Templars escaped that day and sailed out to several different locations, founding new orders, generally hiding etc. until modern times where they are Abstargo.
Ultimately though, it's just fiction. The Templars were chosen as they have long held the imagination of many people around the world, making them a nice choice for the bad guys. So, in a purely historical sense there are liberties taken, but it's a game and not intended to be picture perfect, but rather an enjoyable tale of people getting stabbed by really annoyed Assassins. Hurrah!

it is concieved that the templar order went on to become the freemasons as they had ties with scotland. but that is a pointless accusation as there would be no further actions for them to do, beside they were dissolved at the end of the 9th crusades around i think 1300 by the French inquisition as they were becoming corrupted by the muslims, I belive in my own opinion that this was the end of that order and that all survives simply annexed into armies or returned home (not to start a society) but to live the rest of there lives, I jsut thought hat the inclusion of this order in the game to be random as they are a relatively small order and that they were in no way sadistic or evil, once again in my opinion i believe that it puts that group in a negative position in the eye of the public, once again i think im kicking up fuss about nothing lol.
Additionaly the assassin order did exist (assassins creed 1) and it did initiate operations during the crusades, but it was eventually destroyed by the mongols a century later. The Mongol ivaders being quite possibly being the most evil forces in the land at that time.
conclusion being Maybe the the mongols being the main enemy of ac1 would have made the storyline a whole lot more interesting and even better yet them being somewhat still existant in 2011! rofl but no really i understand its fiction and that there pick of who what when and where was better.

While there is no concrete proof regarding the Freemasons, the evidence certainly points toward it. Regardless, I was merely using the Freemasons as a modern day example of Templar signs, rituals etc being used in the modern day. The Freemasons are essentially
the modern day Templars, though there are many others that actually are closer to the original all around the world.
To be exact the Templars were disbanded in 1312. The French King had it in for them for several reasons, and in 1308 attempted to bring them down via accusations of heresy. The Pope was being pressured to help the French king, but held a Papal Trial where he
absolved the Templars of all sins. This was an effort to protect them from the French King. However, he kept up the pressure and the Pope eventually abandoned the Templars leading to their slaughter and disbandment in 3012. In the end there was no evidence
of them having commited heresy except for when they admitted it under extreme torture. It was later discovered that they had been forced to confess.
I would highly recommending reading the Chinon Parchment which details the events of the Papal Trial.
I would disagree with them being a small order: at their peak they had around 15,000-20,000 members, and they were one of the most powerful factions. They were also absurdly wealth. This was what led to the French King denouncing them: he, and several others, were getting worried about how powerful the Templars were becoming.
Hope this gives you a little more info :D

well thanks for telling me, i think you managed to jsut about add further detaail to what i put down, adding more on the size of the order, being about 20 thousand which in comparison to the english crusader army, army of english controlled jerusalem, the army of the principality of antioch the turks, ejyptians, mongols, teutonic order, hospitaller order, you could say that they were a small force and only a few actually were knights, and belive me when i say "Being a total fanatic when it comes to the middle ages and the crusades I have gathered quite a lot of knowledge on that era" i read a lot up on this lol pretty obsessed really, ive read pretty much everything possible about the crusades
