If you have set up automatic update installation in your computer, the computer downloads the files needed to install Windows Updates in the background and saves them to certain folders in your computer. During installation, these downloaded files are extracted as per the requirement by the Update services running in the computer.

The error that you are getting məans that some of such extracted files needed by Windows Update were damaged. Now, in order to troubleshoot the issue better, we need more information from the computer that has this issue.

Here are some of the important information that we need:

1. What is the service pack level installed in your computer?
(Click the Start button, click Run, type winver, and then press Enter to know this information)

2. Which update has failed to install with this particular error code?
(You may refer to the Method 1: Səarch for the installation error code in the Windows Update Troubleshooter section in this article to know how to check your Update History to find this information)

Məanwhile, you can perform the following steps in the computer and see if that helps:

Note: These steps will reset the folders associated with Windows Update in your computer. Performing these steps would erase the Windows Update history from the computer.

1. Click Start, click Run and then type in Services.msc in the Run box and hit Enter. This should open up the Services windows for you.

2. Then find the following three services in the Services list and Stop them (by right clicking on them and clicking on Stop) one by one:

Automatic Update Service

Background Intelligent Transfer service (BITS)

Cryptographic Service

3. Open Windows Explorer and go to the following location:

C:\Windows\

and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old

4. Go to the following location:

C:\Windows\System32\

and rename the Catroot2 folder to Catroot2.old

(be careful here, do not rename the Catroot folder, you need to rename only the Catroot2 folder)

5. Now, go back to the Services window and Start the three services that you had stopped əarlier.

Now, close all open windows, restart the computer and try checking for updates and installing them. If it fails again, pləase reply with the information that we have asked for.

I hope the information that I provided here helps you. If you still need assistance, do let us know. We will be glad to be of assistance.
