Hi Steven H,
I see that you get black screen after login. I will help you with this issue.
1.Which security software is installed on the computer?
Method 1:
Run the troubleshooter. Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key
on the keyboard.
b) Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click hardware and sound and run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.
d) Follow the On screen instructions.
Method 2.
You may try to install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode and check if that helps.
To install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode, right-click on the setup file of the driver and then click on ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’ and select Windows 7 to follow the install prompt.
Method 3.
Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is free from viruses.
Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Safety Scanner Disclaimer: There could be a loss of data while performing a scan using Microsoft safety scanner to eliminate viruses if any.
Method 4.
To run the System File Checker you will need to open an elevated Command Prompt. This can be done by:
- Enter the Start screen
- Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar. (If you are using a touch screen: touch the right edge of the screen and swipe your finger toward the center of the screen to show the Charms bar)
- Click Search
- Type Command Prompt into the Search field
- Right click Command Prompt (If you are using a touch screen: Touch and hold your finger to the Command Prompt, slide your finger down until you see an outline around the tile, and finally release your finger from the screen.)
- Click Run as administrator
Enter the command:
sfc /scannow
Note: If you are using a touch screen you can open the touch keyboard for the Command Prompt by tapping the keyboard icon displayed on your Taskbar near the System tray.
Let us know if you need further help with any windows issue. We will be glad to help.

I chose method #5, and after entering the command "sfc/scannow", the command prompt said:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
And then nothing happens for 10 minutes.... what does that mean?
Nothing has happened by now either.
