Windows 8 Black Screen after Login, can't rest, restore or refresh

I upgraded my laptop, a Dell Inspiron N5050 to windows 8 about 2 months ago and it worked perfectly until last week when all of a sudden i got this black screen and it kept restarting until it launched the recovery mode and i then had to do a refresh which worked perfectly until a couple of days ago when i installed some windows updates and came back to my computer to see it had hibernated itself, upon reopening the laptop it continued with the updates and launched into windows 8 login page fine. That's where the problem comes in, once I've logged in it goes to a black screen with a grey bar at the bottom where the taskbar is on the desktop. I can launch into programs by getting into the task manager, but the 'taskbar' remains all grey, and when i swipe to the corners or to the right nothing comes up so i can't access the start menu. So after this happened i thought i'd try to refresh again, the only way i could attempt this is using the task manager to launch the control panel and going to the recovery section and clicking the "you can refresh it in pc settings" and it comes up with a warning headed explorer.exe saying class not registered and so i tried to system restore, but that fails to happen and i cannot see a reset option. Although I can use my laptop like this most things do not work like my dvdr drive. Can anyone help? I hope I've given enough detail.

Hi Steven H,

I see that you get black screen after login. I will help you with this issue.

1.Which security  software is installed on the computer?

Method 1:

Run the troubleshooter. Follow these steps:

a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click hardware and sound and run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.
d) Follow the On screen instructions.

Method 2.

You may try to install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode and check if that helps.

To install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode, right-click on the setup file of the driver and then click on ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’ and select Windows 7 to follow the install prompt.

Method 3.

Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is free from viruses.

Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Safety Scanner Disclaimer: There could be a loss of data while performing a scan using Microsoft safety scanner to eliminate viruses if any.

Method 4.

To run the System File Checker you will need to open an elevated Command Prompt. This can be done by:

  • Enter the Start screen
  • Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar. (If you are using a touch screen: touch the right edge of the screen and swipe your finger toward the center of the screen to show the Charms bar)
  • Click Search
  • Type Command Prompt into the Search field
  • Right click Command Prompt (If you are using a touch screen: Touch and hold your finger to the Command Prompt, slide your finger down until you see an outline around the tile, and finally release your finger from the screen.)
  • Click Run as administrator

Enter the command: sfc /scannow
Note: If you are using a touch screen you can open the touch keyboard for the Command Prompt by tapping the keyboard icon displayed on your Taskbar near the System tray.

I chose method #5, and after entering the command "sfc/scannow", the command prompt said:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification 100% complete.

And then nothing happens for 10 minutes.... what does that mean?

Nothing has happened by now either.
