Need to Rename User Profile OR “copy” profile into a correctly named one.

At the finish of the initial install “custom” (clean) of Win 7 (in place Upgrade crashed several times), I was asked to put in the name of the home computer in addition to the workgroup or similar. Once there it had my last name (as that was the computer name from before) as User. Thought WRONGLY I could change it later. OOPS.

I used “easy transfer” to bring everything (4 user accts) back (flawlessly I might add).

This caused “User”(lastname) to be linked to “User” name from the "old computer" which was “firstname”.

For example –

Say it was the Beatles Home Computer. There were/are John, Paul, George, and Ringo., let's say I was John. Therefore I SHOULD HAVE BEEN correctly -- Beatles-Home-Computer/John.

Copied all files and settings from my Vista Home Pro HDD via “easy transfer”.

So when I ran “easy transfer” it matched John to Beatles as the USER, the problem was created. I became Beatles-Home-Computer/Beatles.

So
I have created “new” admin users and launched them so as to get to the “advanced” User Profile Settings in order to “Copy to”, hoping to copy from that profile (Beatles) to my correctly named one (John). Unfortunately, the “copy to” button is dulled and unavailable. The ONLY profile from which a copy can be made is the “default”.

I have no hidden files or limited access to other OS’s. It appears this should work. But doesn’t – from ANY User other than the ‘default” user.

So now its Beatles-Home-Computer/Beatles. I just want to return it to Beatles-Home-Computer/John.

ANY SOLUTIONS???

But as a last resort can I ??

Can I rerun "easy transfer" (FOR THAT USER ONLY) into the correct name?? Are there "administrator" privileges inherent in the initial User that would not have migrated? Again, it seems sooooo simple but I've had "corrupted profiles" years (and tears) ago that took MANY hours to remedy. I don't want to have that on this new install of 7.

AGAIN -- BIG THANKS

Thanks Azeez !!!!

I think I found an EASIER Solution you may want to note.

It comes via the "Easy Transfer" function in Accessories (or by download).

1 -Create the User Name you want your profile to be and launch it to set it up. Once opened initially and desktop prepared, you can close.

2 - Run Easy Transfer to save to whatever location. I ran it to a backup HDD. With 4 Users and lots of stuff the process took several hours. It asks you NOT to do anything on the Computer while this process runs, as makes sense.

3 - After the Easy Transfer is complete. Go to the location or drive it was save on and click on it. It will display ALL the "Users" copied and you can check which ones you want copied to your "New Computer." Obviously, I just checked the name I had PREVIOUSLY (NOT the New User Name Yet), that I wanted to change. Then Click "ADVANCED" settings and it will show where you can match THAT Previous USER with the NEWly name USER you created.

4- Hit "Transfer". Took all of 15 minutes. IF the PREVIOUS User was Password Protected YOU will HAVE to Enter THAT passord for copy access initially. That NEW User has now become  a clone of the previous User and works perfectly. The ONLY thing that I see that DID NOT change was the Start Menu items but I corrected that ASAP. Even Outlook 07 .pst file's path was correct and working.

5 -- I will delete the OLD Previous USER once I'm ABSOLUTELY SURE there is NO exceptions however I feel REALLY confident that THIS was a GREAT Microsoft Solution.

BTW -- is it AT ALL Possible that ANY rights and privileges associated with my initial ADMIN USER were not transferred??

Hope this solution helps many who I think came up against this.

BIG THANKS

Hi third-wave,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

You would need to create a new user and copy the profile from the old user to the new user, then if you like you can delete the old user account.

After you create the new user (profile), you can copy the files from the existing user (profile). You must have at least three user accounts on the computer to complete these steps, including the new account you just created.

1. Log on as a user other than the new user you just created or the user that you want to copy files from.

2. Open Documents by clicking the Start button and then clicking Documents.

3. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.

If you don't see the Tools menu, press ALT.

4. Click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.

5. Locate the C:\Users\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.

6. Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:

• Ntuser.dat

• Ntuser.dat.log

• Ntuser.ini

7. Click the Edit menu, and then click Copy.

If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT.

8. Locate the C:\Users\New_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed, and New_Username is the name of the new user profile you created.

9. Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste.

If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT.

10. Log off, and then log back on as the new user.

If you have e-mail messages in an e-mail program, such as Windows Mail, you must import your e-mail messages and addresses to the new user profile before you delete the old profile. If everything is working properly, you can delete the old profile.
