Can't play asf files on Windows 10

Since Windows 10 was installed on my computer I cannot open asf video files.  I get this message:

Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.

If I try to download the Windows Media Player software, I get a message that i need to have Windows XP to do so.

What do i need to do to be able to play these files.

thanks.

Hi Janis,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

We need more information to help you better.

1) Through where you are downloading the Windows media player?

2) Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Kindly be informed that Windows media player will be available in Windows by default once you have installed Windows 10 in your computer.

You may find the Windows media player in your computer by searching for Windows media player in the Windows search bar and then you may click on the Windows media player from the search bar results to access the Windows media player.

Run the Windows media player settings troubleshooter and check if it helps.

  1. Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard and select Control Panel

  2. Type Troubleshooting in the search bar on the Control Panel.

  3. Click on View all on the left navigation pane.

  4. Click on Windows media player settings to run the Windows media player settings troubleshooter.

  5. Click on Advanced on the Windows media player settings troubleshooter dialog box and click on Run as administrator (Enter the credentials if required).

  6. Click on Next and follow onscreen instruction complete the Windows media player settings troubleshooter.

The Advanced Systems Format (ASF) is the preferred Windows Media file format. With Windows Media Player, if the appropriate codecs are installed on your computer, you can play audio content, video content, or both, that is compressed with a wide variety of codecs and that is stored in an .asf file.

You may refer to the below article for more information about supported multimedia file types in Window media player.

I hope the above information helps. Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.

Thank you.

Hello, I followed your instructions for installing a codec to play ASF files, having received an error message that "Windows Media Player cannot play, burn, rip, or sync the file because a required audio codec is not installed on your computer." I am running Windows 10 (but don't know what version of Windows Media Player I have because there is no About tab to reveal that information--another frustration).

When I run the Troubleshooter, even using the Advanced tab, I get this message:

Issues found
Configuration settings might be set incorrectly.
Configuration settings might be set incorrectly.
Unexpected Windows Media Player behavior might be due to configuration errors.

Reset default Windows Media Player settings
Completed

This does not, however, solve the problem, as the same error message shows up when I try to play an ASF file. Any suggestions for what to do next?

The same thing happened to me when I upgraded to Windows 10. They (and some other file types as well) used to play in Windows Media Player, and now will only play in "Movies & TV" where you can't drag and drop files. It also will not let me choose "Movies & TV" as the default program because I guess it doesn't recognize .asf files as a video type.
