1803 update "Desktop unavailable"

Windows already tried to install the 1803 April (although 1803 logically would be March) update for the 12th time (!)

The furthest it got was a not functioning taskbar, and a disappeared desktop with only the recycle bin visible on a black background.

A restart subsequently results in restoring the previous version (1709) of Windows.

Laptop: MSI CR720.

Is this a common error?

Are there any solutions to arrive at a normal install?

You should upgrade to 1803 manually.

1. Right click on Windows Start > Windows Powershell (Admin)
Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

2. Type following in Windows Start Search box and hit Enter %systemroot%\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log to something else.
If it doesn't allow you to rename - Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer
Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update, SFC etc)

3. You can go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

3.1 Click Update now to update to 1803 through Upgrade Assistant.
OR
3.2 You can download the latest Windows 10 package from this link (media creation tool) and follow the instructions there to upgrade. Use the very simple instructions given under Using this tool to upgrade this PC to Windows 10

Okay, thanks, I'm trying this.

Past experience, however, teaches that these "feature updates" appear to function more as a "lottery", only possible to install by trying all kind of tricks... And even then, in the case of update 1703 and 1709 I had to manually remove and replace the wifi-card to have it recognised.

EDIT:

still no better results:

Message: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable" - and then "Restoring your previous version of Windows..."

Same issue here. Tried the update on my Dell and all I got was a black screen with a mouse, then on my Asus I get the black desktop screen with only the recycle bin icon.

On my Dell it just kept restarting, trying to reinstall the software.

On the Asus after every restart, it goes back to the setup screen telling me these "updates help protect you from an online world".

HELP both of my laptops are basically useless at this point.

Hi!

Did you get the c:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\dekstop not available or accessible ??

Most of people who encounter this issue have a third party anti-virus that have conflict on Windows update (1803)

We'll try to create that desktop folder that is missing on your computer

Try to open task manager and click on  File>run new task

Type in: CMD with Administrative privilege

open the folder location using this command

cd config\systemprofile

then press enter

Create "Desktop" folder using this command

MKDIR Desktop

Press enter then restart the computer

* As much as possible use an Ethernet/wired connection

If this steps wont work you can reset the computer with keep all files option from Windows recovery (You can tr the SHIFT+ RESTART procedure)

Hi Chuckdog,

Did you make sure that the only capital letter is the "D" on Desktop?

Try to press CTRL + ALT + DEL then choose sign out

Click on sign in option at Log in screen then choose to enter password instead or pin or the other way around

Please let me know what happen..

If the issue still persist, you can go ahead and reset the computer

Regards,

Luigi T.
