Hello,

Thank you for posting your concern here in Microsoft Community and welcome to the Windows 10 Family.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. I would be happy to assist you further from here.

From the description provided, I understand that you are facing issues with driver configuration for you computer

Kindly follow the below suggested methods and see if it helps to resolve the issue.

Method 1

Try to download and run the Fixit tool from the link below.

Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/hardware_device_problems

Method 2

Try to download the drivers for the device using the Windows device driver update.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers

Alternatively, if the update fails to register and download the requisite drivers for the device, you can also use the vendor id of the device and look for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog.

FAQ: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/FaqGeneric.aspx

Unknown and uninstalled devices will be listed under Other. The device will have a yellow alert symbol on it. The properties for the device will show that no driver was found.

Under the Device Properties, select the Details tab and scroll down to Hardware IDs. Each Hardware ID is comprised of some very useful information. The VID value provides the vendor ID and the PID value provides the Product ID of the device. Make a note of the PID value. Enter the PID value in the search box of Update Catalog. In cases where you have multiple device types listed, narrow down your search by also adding in the VID value.

Once downloaded and extracted, you can point Device Manager to this driver to install the hardware.

Additionally, you may also refer to the below article for more information on troubleshooting issues with Printer.

Note: Links relevant to Windows 8.1 also applies to Windows 10.

Hope the above information was helpful. If you need further assistance, please feel free to write to us and we will be happy to help you.

Thank You.

First - not very helpful to post a canned response ......

Fixit does apparently not run on Windows 10, did  you know that?

Can you please provide a bit more specific answer to the question, I have exactly the same issue.

This is not a matter of up to date drivers, or a hardware problem.  This was a problem that started with Windows 8, then got fixed with Windows 8.1, then returned with Windows 10.

The Device Manager shows the device as working and configured properly.  There is no indication of any problem until you try to print, whereupon the notification area states that the printer cannot print.

HP's diagnostic tool 'Print and Scan Doctor 4.7' states that everything is in working order [drivers, spool, device manager, queue, conflicts, etc], except that the printer is configured for the wrong port and the port configuration cannot be changed.  I can also verify that my personal 8450 works because I can plug memory cards directly into the printer and print photos directly from data contained on them.

I am aware that HP is not Microsoft's responsibility, but this seems a case of an older, well built, peripheral that the company has decided 'well, these units aren't going to break on you, and if we continue supporting them, you won't buy our shoddier new peripherals and get on the planned obsolescence bandwagon.'  Where this might impact your business model though, is this is a good enough printer for me to return to Windows 7 or 8.1 just to continue using it.

Would it work if I attached the printer to the network router?  It's one floor up from my office, but it's either that or attach it to a PC running Windows 8.1, as the 8450 worked on that.

1.  I'm seeking help, not providing it.

2.  I have no experience with this printer on a network, or with networking at all really.

3.  Sorry.

4.  Still wish someone out there at either MS or HP gave even 1/2 a popcorn fart about this.

Hi,

I have been able to resolve this issue. Some background:

I have the printer connected to my LAN.

I upgraded two PCs one from Windows 7 and one from Windows 8.1

In both cases I chose not to retain any data so I guess that pretty much does a from scratch Windows 10 install.

After the update I went to add the 8450 only to find there was no driver available.

I updated the drivers list from Windows update and there was then an 8400 series driver available.

I have installed this and the printer appears to work fine so far.

In detail:

On the Devices and Printers window click "Add a printer".

The system will scan for printers - it didn't find mine.

On the "Choose a device or printer to add to this PC" window click "The printer that I want isn't listed"

On the "Find a printer by other options" window select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" and click "Next"

On the next window enter the IP address of the printer and click "Next"

You should then see the "Install the printer driver" window. At this point click on "Windows Update" and retire to prepare you favourite beverage.

Once the update is complete you should be able to select "HP" under "Manufacturer" and then "HP Photosmart 8400 Series" under Printers. Click "Next"

The driver should install and you will be prompted to print a test page.

Good luck.

8450 Manual is here:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00230503.pdf

Printing a network configuration page
You can print a network configuration page from the printer without even being connected to a
computer. The configuration page provides useful information regarding the printer IP address,
network statistics, and other network settings. You can also display a summary of select network
settings on the printer itself.

To print a detailed network configuration page
1.     Press
Menu on the printer.

2.     Select
Tools
, then press OK

3.     Select
Network
, then press OK

4.     Select
Print detailed report
, then press OK

To view a summary of network settings
1.     Press Menu on the printer.

2.     Select
Tools
, then press OK

3.     Select
Network
, then press OK

4.     Select
Display summary
, then press OK

If you currently have a DHCP (router assigned) IP address I suggest that you change this to be a fixed IP. Check out the section in the manual on the printer web interface to find out how to do this. You might also need to check out your router settings to find which IP addresses are used for DHCP and which you can use as fixed addresses. Because of the number of different routers I can't really help with this. If you need help on DHCP I suggest you find the forum for your ISP or router manufacturer as appropriate and ask there.

Method 1 - The Fixit Tool listed does not work on Windows 10.

Method 2 - Again you are referencing a fix for Windows 8, not 10.

Your answers are ignoring the problem - Hardware that worked before upgrading to Windows 10 no longer do.

The HP Photosmart is an upper priced printer and the HP drivers should have been built in.

Once more an "upgrade" results in less functionality of the operating system.

From the looks of it the "Microsoft Windows 10 Family" is a bit dysfunctional.

Hi redkcir,

Did you see my November 11th post above?

There is now a Photosmart 8400 series driver available via Windows update but you may need to update your local driver cache and/or apply the driver manually rather than relying on auto detection.

Hope that helps.

Paul
