Windows 10 Network Sharing Issues

My Windows 10 PC cannot see itself on the Network. I am not using Homegroup as this inhibits Sleep mode, but connecting with username and password.

When I open the Network folder I see other computers on the Network but I cannot see the computer I am working on.   I also cannot see the computer from another Windows 10 laptop on the Network when working on WiFi (although I can see the Media available from it, and am able to connect a network printer), but I can see it when connected with an Ethernet cable.  If I then switch back to WiFi on the laptop I can still see and access the other computer until I reboot the laptop when I cannot see the laptop or the other computer in the Network folder.

The Windows Network Troubleshooter says it is not able to diagnose the problem.

I have also tried sharing using Homegroup but this does not resolve the problem either.

I found another closed thread from 2016 with the advice below and have followed all these steps without resolving the issue.

I had found that the Computer Browser service was running, but with Manual start.  When I changed this to Automatic start it did fix the problem for a short time, but when the computer was put to sleep and restarted again it had stopped working again.

SFC found no issues.

I am getting errors in Event Viewer saying

 "Event 8003 bowser"

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer SUEDELLXPS2 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{06FFD6F7-F9DE-4244-A88E-76C15AFBE911}. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

  • Is your computer connected to domain?

There could be several reasons for this cause and to diagnose the issue, we can try the following steps and check.

Step 1: Check if Network Discovery is turned on.

Please refer to: Enable or disable network discovery

Step 2: Check Event Viewer to get detailed information about the problem. Refer the following links.

Open Event Viewer

What information appears in event logs? (Event Viewer)

Step 3: Check for the Computer Browser service, if it is running.

1. Click Start, type services.msc in Start Search.

2. Look for the  Computer Browser service.

3. Right click on Computer Browser service and select Properties. Check if it is started.

4. If it is stopped select  Start or Restart. Make sure that the service is started and set as Automatic.

5. Click Apply and OK, if you make changes.

Step 4: Temporarily try to disable the computer`s anti-virus program and check if the issue persists. If you are able to connect, then you might need to check for any updates and the firewall settings within the security software.

Note: Ensure to enable your anti-virus back on the computer after you finish these steps. It is not recommended to disable these settings on the computer. This is just to troubleshoot the issue.

Disable antivirus software

Step 5: Make sure the network workgroup name is the same for all the computers. Also try turning off password-protected sharing and check for the issue.

1. Open Advanced sharing settings by clicking theStart button, and then clickingControl Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.

2. Click to expand the current network profile.

3. Under Password protected sharing, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click Save changes.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Also, try performing a SFC scan to see if it resolves the issue. Refer the following article.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Is Network discovery enabled?
Do you have Public Folder Sharing enabled?

Open Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type:

netsh int ip reset

Hit Enter
Exit the prompt then restart

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot
Scroll down
Click Network adapters
Click Run the Troubleshooter

When complete, restart to see if the problem is resolved.

If not, press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Network adapters

Right click your adapter
Click Uninstall

Exit Device Manager, restart. Windows 10 should detect the network adapter then reinstall it. Check if you can connect and browse.

also try:

Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status

Scroll to the bottom then click Network reset.

If you have a VPN enabled, disable it.

Disable the Windows Firewall then try connecting.

OK - I have done all these steps.

1. netsh int ip reset - no change

2. network adaptors troubleshooter - no problems detected

3. uninstall / reinstall network adaptors - no change

4. network reset - now main computer (CHILLBLAST) was visible in laptop (LENOVOT460) but could not connect.  CHILLBLAST was not visible in Network folder on CHILLBLAST.  Running troubleshooter on LENOVOT460 gave message  "The remote device or resource (CHILLBLAST) is not setup to accept connections on port "The File and Printer Sharing (SMB)

I checked in Network Sharing Settings on CHILLBLAST and File and Printer Sharing had been disabled in the reset.  I changed this to turn on File and Printer Sharing and tried again to access CHILLBLAST from LENOVOT460.  It did not work and gave same message in Troubleshooter.

I then turned off Kaspersky Firewall and it still failed but this time Troubleshooter reported  "file and printer sharing resource (CHILLBLAST) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts.   The remote computer isn't responding to connections on Port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it may be temporarily unavailable.  Windows couldn't find an y problems with the firewall on your computer.

Windows Firewall is not enabled, and firewall is handled by Kaspersky.

Looks like problem may be connected to Kaspersky Firewall, although it only occurs when LENOVOT460 is accessing the network via wifi, not by ethernet cable

The Chillblast computer was originally a clean install of 1507 and has been updated since then and is now on 1709 Build 16299.248.

I am going to recommend you downgrade to Windows 10 1703.

Step 1: download Windows 10 1703 from the following link:
https://tb.rg-adguard.net/index.php?sid=74a7cf5...

Choose the following:

- Windows Final
- Windows 10, version 1703
- Windows 10 Pro + Home
- English
- x64 (64 bit) x32 (32 bit)

Step 2: create a bootable copy
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wik...

Step 3: perform a custom install
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki...

You should backup your files before downgrading.
Applications will need to be reinstalled.
The custom install will archive your files, so you can recover them from the Windows.old folder - make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

There are some compatibility issues with Windows 10 version 1709 and certain hardware or software. There is no explanation why a lot of these problems are happening in Windows 10 1709, but the release is significantly flawed. Software and Hardware that once worked in previous versions, just suddenly stops working in Windows 10 1709 after an upgrade and sometimes loses functionality or stability.

I don't think that this will fix the problem, as it has existed for a long time, right through many versions of Windows 10.  I have only just tried to see if I can fix it as I was have a bit of spare time.    Maybe I need to try a different network adaptor and see if that sorts the problem.   I am thinking also that the problem with the wireless access from the laptop may be due to an issue in the wireless access point?  Does this seem feasible?   There are some firmware updates I could apply which may make a difference.

Someone help me understand why the default  go to as a fix for this issue is to "downgrade the OS"?

Isn't that just about the STUPIDEST thing in the world to suggest?

I mean, WTH is the point of updates, if only to install them for security reason, you then get told to uninstall them, downgrade and go back to the previous version???

Try enabling SMBv2 in Powershell(Admin) using this command: Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $true then hit Y and reboot the computer.

Do this on any effected computers.

I've run into some sharing issues in Windows 10 that were solved by doing this. For some reason SMBv2 (and 3 by extension) were disabled.
