how do I make my network secure instead of open?
Hi H, is your network set to Private?

If not:

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor

In the left pane, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles

Expand the Profiles Key (folder)

That will contain sub-keys with different GUID

Click each Sub-key

On the right, check the ProfileName value

When you find the sub-key with the correct ProfileName value

At the top you will see 'Category' - double click that

Change its value from 0 to 1

Click OK

Close the Registry Editor and restart your PC

Hi there,

That is quite a vague question, are you referring to the wireless?
If a WiFi network is open, that means it has no password and anyone can connect. This setting would need to be changed on the Router / Wireless Access Point and would differ device to device.

To make your network Private i.e. more secure -

1. Windows Key+I to invoke Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi (or any other choice as per your requirement) > Manage known networks > Click the required network > Properties > Here you can make it Private / Public (Catch is that Private / Public option will appear only if you are connected to it)
OR
2. Windows Key+X > Windows Powershell (Admin)
Copy paste below line and Enter
Get-NetConnectionProfile
Pick up the Network name from here
Copy and paste following line and Enter
Set-NetConnectionProfile -Name "Name Picked up in above Step" -NetworkCategory Private

You need to open the router settings and add a password to your WiFi from there.
Post the make and model of your router for better help.

If you have a wired (Ethernet) network, it's already secure. No one can join your network unless they are connected with an Ethernet cable. The only additional step you need to take is to password-protect your router's administration console, so that only you can change your network's configuration settings.

If you have a wireless (WiFi) network you need to take the additional step of password-protecting your network, so no one can join your network unless they know the password.

In either case, make sure your password(s) are sufficiently long and complex that they can't be guessed, and change your password(s) every few months.

For a WiFi network there is a technicality surrounding how data is transmitted. Most routers default to the most secure method, which is WPA2 AES.
