Office 365 programs not shutting down properly Causing Office 365 Outlook to stick at loading profile.

Office 365 programs not shutting down properly Causing Office 365 Outlook to stick at loading profile.

Temporary Solution is to end task the programs in Task Manager then Outlook 365 starts OK.

I have already tried Quick Repair, Full OnLine Repair and changing from 32 bit to 64 bit versions of office all work temporarily but not permanently.

Hidden copies of Access, Excel and Word seem to randomly appear in Task Manager after they should have shut down and then prevent Outlook 365 from getting passed the loading profile screen until I End Task Them.

Hello GarinasRogers,

Thanks for your screenshots. May I know whether the suggestions I offered above are helpful for you?

In addition, based on your scenario, please check Start-up tab in Task Manager whether Excel, Access or Word are there, if so, please disable them from starting up automatically, and then restart your computer and check whether the same issue occurs.

Moreover, since there is an Microsoft Office Click-to-Run application in the Task Manager, may I know whether the Office programs in your computer is pre-install programs in your computer? If so, please try to uninstall them and install Office 365 programs in Office portal.

Best Regards,

Betty

Office is a Subscription Product Office 365 Personal not preloaded.

There are no Office products listed in the Start-up tab in Task Manager.

Using Excel as an example the Hidden copy of Excel appears as in my previous screen shot after I close Excel down but this does not happen on every occasion hence my use of the word random. Before that Excel is listed in the Apps section of Task Manager as in the Screenshot below.

Thanks for your suggestions and assistance to date.

I have since killed the previous Outlook Profile and created a new profile.

No Change to the spurious office programs preventing Outlook 365 from starting.

I then ran a Full windows security scan from Windows defender.

Nothing untoward found.

I then ran a OffLine windows security scan from Windows defender.

I did not see or find the results of this action log.

However without doing anything else my original problem has disappeared.

GA,

If the problem comes back please try the suggested workaround in this article, https://support.office.com/en-us/article/outlook-won-t-open-or-is-stuck-at-loading-profile-6d9590bb-3c0f-4caf-9599-d5cf6b5d3bd0?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US.  This is an emerging issue we are investigating.  It appears that presence functionality is causing the other Office processes to acquire a lock on the PST/OST data file.  This causes problems when trying to start Outlook.  We are investigating the issue to get to root cause.

Hi Gabriel

Disable Outlook presence features

  1. In Outlook, select File, > Options, > People

  2. Uncheck the check boxes for the following options if they are enabled:

    • Display online status next to name

Please note that Display online status next to name is already checked but greyed out so that it cannot be unchecked.

Garinas,

I had another report of the grayed out in a separate thread.  Try unchecking just "Show user photographs when available".  Save that setting and restart Outlook.  Let me know if you see the problem come back.  If so I will see if there is a policy setting for the "Display online status" that we can change.
