correction, you need the HD for some features of SOME games, and the playing of old gen xbox games.  you can play the 360 just fine without the HD inside of it (even games online).  I have been using NOTHING but the 4 gig of internal memory of my 360 slim since I got it this fall and still have over 3 gig free.

300dollar 360 = serious gamer

200dollar 360 = new gamer not so serious

most stores would push the 300dollar ones
