Substitute for headset

I have an older Samsung headset with a mic attached. It's got 3.5mm jacks, but I have an adapter with a USB on the end. Also have a USB adapter that came with my Xbox. Will that work to substitute the headset for now if I plug it into my console? If not, are there any other substitutes for the headset?

Lost my headset, and won't have money until the end of the week, so buying a new one is kind of out of the question for now.

USB audio output is not supported.

I don't think any "USB adapter" has ever come with an Xbox 360, certainly not an audio adapter. (I don't know about original Xbox consoles.) Can you describe it more?

The controller's headset jack works with many mobile/cordless phone headsets; I've used several, usually from Plantronics. If you know that your Samsung is 3.5mm and it doesn't fit, the controller must need a 2.5mm plug. Do you have any other old cell phone headsets around?
