Receiving Error number: 0x80090008 on manual Windows Update

Good day!

... I'm pretty much out of ideas for solving this.

I'm on Windows Xp Sp3. I use AVG a/v 9.0.733. I don't use 3rd party firewalls -- I use a router that's properly configured. All 4 of my antispy/malware programs say "all clear".

I have Automatic Updates on, but it hasn't dl'd anything since Dec. 8th 2009. When I go to manually update, I receive " The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."  with a 0x80090008 error code.

I've searched EVERYWHERE, and only find confusing conversations about error logs and such. I can't help feeling that it's a corrupt .dll or something.

Any help would be AMAZING! Thanks in advance!

AVG9 is updating...don't use/have any of the "frills" such as link scanner or tool bars installed. I don't use Resident Shield either...

Did you do a CUSTOM install of AVG and opt-out of installing Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, and Security toolbar?

Was AVG running in the background when you installed IE8 and/or SP3?

Is the Windows Firewall enabled at all times?

By any chance have you recently done a Repair Install of WinXP for any reason?

The above notwithstanding, you may as well not even have AVG installed if you disable Resident Shield's realtime protection. In fact, running that way may have caused the infections that in turn have horked installing updates (infections that neither AVG nor any other scans cannot and will not detect).

Visit the Microsoft Virus Solution and Security Center for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit Support for Microsoft Update for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates.
