How can I repair my Windows XP registry if I cannot access my repair\software file?

Hi, I got the blue screen of death on my laptop. The message was that my config/software file was missing or corrupt.
Using an XP cd and the recoverI am following the instructions in this microsoft support article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 to backup and copy new files from my repair directory. I was able to do all of them except the software file. I'm getting a message that it is not in the repair folder. Can I access this software file from either my XP install cd or another location so I can fix this and get my computer up and running again?
Thanks!

Answer
Usually that message just means that XP can't find the file due to some corruption in the NT File System (NTFS).  Corruption like that can occur due to a power interruption, power failure, puling the plug, removing the battery, using the power or reset button, aborted restart or ungraceful shutdown.

Have any of those event occurred prior to the incident?

When you see that error, in spite of what it looks like and says and in spite of what you may have been told or read about and in spite of what any search engines indicate you should do (KB307545) and especially before following any suggestions from any Microsoft engaged Support Engineer "experts", you should always start by running a chkdsk  /r  from the Recovery Console.

I have never used KB307545 to fix this problem and will never even suggest it.

You might want to read through this thread:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system/after-windows-restart-and-then-no-configsystem/83d5c57f-9836-4f3a-bec8-04c7d81861d3

Now if you have made it part of the way through KB307545 but can't find the software file, it may just be named something else or your NTFS is afflicted for it makes no sense to start trying to copy files around on a corrupted file system.

After the chkdsk /r runs clean, you may need to "undo" your partial implementation of KB307545, something the Microsoft engaged Support Engineer "expert" should be able to help you with if you can't figure it out yourself.

But, I can tell you that the advice from Fahimulla K, Microsoft engaged Support "expert" will not help you at all, it will not work and this "expert" has not tried his own ideas to see if they work, and I will pick that apart next and maybe this alleged "expert" will come up with some advice that does work.

As a Microsoft engaged Support Engineer "expert", hopefully he will demonstrate some of that expertise that comes with his title and give you those "available options" he mentions.
