Computer thinks that headphones are plugged in when they are not, won't play sound through speakers.

I don't know what happened. One day I could use my headphones, or unplug them and use my laptop's speakers instead. The next day I open up my laptop and the speakers don't work. The strange thing is, my computer plays its turn-on sound (ASUS gaming series, the logo kind of explodes into existance) when the computer starts up through the speakers, so I know the speakers worked. I scoured around my settings and discovered that for some reason my computer thinks that there is something plugged into my headphone jack, even though there is not. When I plug headphones in they play fine. I haven't dropped it and I think I treat it pretty well. Searched through settings, couldn't figure out how to disable the headphone jack without disabling the speakers. Any suggestions? It's really annoying to not have speakers.

Method 2: You may also download and install the latest sound card drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

 

a.       Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in Start Search box and hit Enter.

b.      In device manager, expand the sound drivers listed in the device list.

c.       Right click on the sound driver > click Uninstall.

d.      Install the downloaded driver.
