Window 7 pro -64 it - UAC issues with iTunes, some programs, and home network backups

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit on an HP Pavilion laptop that is about 4 years old.  I've upgraded the hard drive and memory, and all software is up to date.  I also run viruscan software with continuous protection, multi-scans per week, and malwarebytes scans deep twice a week.

My UAC has started asking for permission when I manually start iTunes via a desktop shortcut that has "run as administrator" checked.  iTunes will no longer start automatically when I connect my phone via USB even though I've uninstalled all apple products and reinstalled multiple times using "run as administrator".  Other programs that I try to start manually also ask permission to run.  It also seems to be affecting my automated backup program that writes to a home network drive (via wireless access) causing the backups to fail for not having permission.  At first I thought that my backup software had issues, because it would crash during the night (when backing up) with a program exception, so I got another backup software and it keeps a log that is telling me that it is having permission issues.   I do not want to turn UAC off for obvious reasons, but I  lowered the permission as low as I am comfortable with to level 3 (not-recommended) but that did not help, so  I put it back to level 2 (recommended).  As part of my attempting to fix this, I've tried to give my network drives permission for ALL to be able to have total access, and that fails as well.  I've had the backup software for 2 years, and the network drive for almost as long with no backup problems until this UAC issue started.   There are no other "users" on my computer, and I have admin level access. I can access all of the files on the network drive just fine from my laptop.

I'm stumped as to how to fix this.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forum.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

  1. What is the exact error message you get when backup software crashes?
  2. Have you made any significant system changes recently that could have caused this issue?

User Account Control (UAC) helps defend your PC against hackers and malicious software. Any time a program wants to make a major change to your computer, UAC lets you know and asks for permission.

User Account Control (UAC) notifies you before changes are made to your computer that require administrator-level permission. The default UAC setting notifies you when programs try to make changes to your computer, but you can change how often UAC notifies you.

Some legitimate applications require a full administrator access token to perform their functions or tasks. The User Account Control (UAC) message is displayed to request consent or credentials to allow an application to use the full administrator access token.

Possibly, the reason why iTunes asks for administrator permission every time you try to run the program manually through desktop shortcut because iTunes is set to run “As Administrator”. This triggers the UAC prompt. Follow the steps below to change this settings and check if that solves the problem.

  1. Right click on iTune’s desktop shortcut (icon), select Properties and then the Compatibility tab.
  2. Uncheck the option: “Run this program as an administrator”.
  3. If this option is greyed out, then click on “Change setting for all users” and uncheck this option in this window.

Note: You need to quit iTunes before making these changes

For iTunes problems that does not automatically launch iTunes when device is attached, follow the steps in the article below.

If the suggestions in the Apple link does not help, you may also follow the steps below.

Find iTunes in your applications folder. Right-click (control-click) on iTunes and select "Show package contents". Look in the "Resources folder" for iTunes helper. Drag it into your Accounts Login items list. Restart your computer and check if that solves the problem.

- I uninstalled my original backup program that was crashing with a program exception, so I do not know what the error was.  I am reinstalling and setting the program to run auto backups again to try and recreate the error.

- I have not made any significant changes, but I do have windows set to run updates automatically.

Itunes:

- I turned off "run as administrator" for my desktop link, and now when I double-click the icon I get "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or  you do not have write permissions for this folder".

- I turned "run as administrator" back on, and iTunes starts after the UAC box comes up asking for permission.

- the link in the instructions "http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-run-an-application-once-with-a-full-administrator-access-token" does not exist.

- I followed the steps to turn off "start iTunes automatically" per the instructions, but the box that is supposed to come up which asks "do you want itunes to start automatically when you connect this iPhone" did not appear.  I have tested this, and iTunes still does not start when I connect my iPhone via USB.

- I tried to follow the instructions "Find iTunes in your applications folder. Right-click (control-click) on iTunes and select "Show package contents". Look in the "Resources folder" for iTunes helper. Drag it into your Accounts Login items list. Restart your computer and check if that solves the problem." but right clicking on "C:/program files (x86)/iTunes.exe" does not have the "show package contents" option.  There is a file "itunesHelper.dll" in the ITuneshelper.resources file.  Is this the correct file??  What is the "accounts login items" list???  I searched my c: drive and could not find any such file.

  1. Is this issue restricted to apple devices? Does auto play works fine with other plug and play devices?
  2. Which version of iTunes is installed on your computer?

I would have you refer the following Apple support articles.

My backup software always crashes with this:

I have uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled, but I always get this crash when a backup tries to run.  I have also tried to repair net framework from the control panel/programs.

iTunes just recently started  getting this message when it is not running, and I attach my iPhone via USB:

The folder "iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this folder".

I have researched this error and tried just about everything that I can find.

I have gone to all of my iTunes files and folders and reset permissions to allow all access.  The files are on my C: drive, and it is not "locked" and I have the drive marked as "shared".  iTunes.exe is also marked as "shared".  I've done this for all "users" even though I am the only user.  But I still get the message.  I also get a UAC prompt whenever I try to start iTunes manually, even though I have admin. privileges set to ON, and the .exe file shared.  I've tried it "off" as well, same results.  Once I click "OK" on the UAC message, iTunes starts.

I've also run multiple extensive deep virus scans and deep Malewarebytes scans - even in safe mode - but nothing is found.

I do not have any other issues except these security issues, and that includes three "certificates" that are expired on third party Outlook 2010 add-ons that I use almost daily, but these certificates have been expired for almost a year.  This is assuming that my backup software is a security issue, since the problem started on the same day as iTunes issues started.  I have two other USB drives attached (for backups) that have no issues.  I can attach a thumb drive, and it works fine  I can access my two network drives (one is a USB attached to router, and one is Ethernet attached), with no issues.  I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that are plug and play and work just fine.

Thanks for your help.  This really has me stumped.

I have WIn 7 Pro, 64-bit and all software is up to date.  I have iTunes 11.1.5.5.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

Which backup software do you use?

I would also suggest you to try the Windows backup from a New User Account.

Refer to the article, Create a user account at:

Please post back if the issue still persists. We’ll be glad to assist you further.
