Windows 7 Devices & Printers (D&P) displays the wrong icons for my MS Wireless Laser 7000 mouse and MS Wireless Laser 7000 keyboard.__

Windows 7 Devices & Printers (D&P) displays the wrong icons for my MS Wireless Laser 7000 mouse and MS Wireless Laser 7000 keyboard.

1. I've installed the latest MS IntelliType and IntelliPoint software for the equipment.
2. The mouse and keyboard function correctly.
3. Software works fine.
4. Sometimes, D&P shows correct photorealistic enhanced icons.
5. Sometimes, D&P shows one incorrect and one correct icon. The incorrect icon will be a generic mouse or keyboard.
6. Sometimes, D&P shows both incorrect icons.
7. A reboot may or may not temporarily fix the problem. It's like a lottery!
8. I've used Device Manager to delete and reinstall both the mouse and keyboard.
9. I've removed and reinstalled the software.
10. I changed the USB port used by the mouse and keyboard.
11. I've updated and rolled back the drivers.
12. Nothing permanently fixes the problem.
13. If I disconnect the USB transceiver and then reconnect it, after a moment, the correct enhanced icons always display. But on the next reboot, the problem reappears.

Any ideas?

Hi Justy48,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Answers!

Try Rebuilding the Icon Cache Database
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT

8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)

9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

Thank you Divya for your suggestion.

1.  I did the procedure to rebuild the icon cache for all of the users.
2.  It worked temporarily.  I could see the icons "rebuilding" in the task bar.
3.  On the next reboot, the keyboard icon was correct.  Mouse icon incorrect.
4.  I do notice something else.  Looking at the icons from left to right: When the USB transceiver icon appears before the M&K icons then everything is correct.  When the mouse or keyboard icon appears first then it's incorrect.
5.  Also, in Device Manager, I have two entries for the mouse and two entries for the keyboard.  Is this normal?  One entry says: HID Keyboard Device and the other entry says Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (IntelliType Pro).  The two mouse entries are similar.  Nothing actually says MS Wireless 7000 Keyboard (or Mouse).

I know this is a minor problem, but I assume that MS wants the Device Stage/Enhanced Icons feature to work.

Thanks again.  I appreciate any help.

Hello Justy48,

Thank you for your post.  A couple of more things to try:

First, you can perform a clean boot to see if a 3rd party application may be interfering with the process Divya R. outlined.  Click HERE for the Clean Boot instructions.

You may need to run through Divya R's steps again once you've performed the clean boot.  If so, perform another clean boot to see if the setting were saved appropriately.

If you continue to lose your settings, let's try a new profile, as yours may have been corrupted.

The steps to create a new profile are below:

Click 'Start' > Right-click 'Computer' > Select 'Manage'
Expand 'Local Users and Groups' > Select 'Users' > Right-click in the right pane and select 'New User'
Type in your credentials and password and select OK
Right-click your new user and select 'Properties
Select the 'Member Of' tab and click 'Add'
Type administrators in the text field and click 'Check Name'
Once the administrators name has been resolved, click OK

Log off of and log back in with the new user's credentials.

Test your printer (you may have to perform Divya R's steps) reboot and test to ensure the settings were saved.

Please let us know if this did or didn't help to resolve your problem.

Cheers

Hi Jason,

Thanks for sticking with the issue.  It took me a few days to find the time to try your latest suggested fixes.  Sorry, no joy.

1.  I did the clean boot which was interesting because it showed I only have eight non-MS services running.  I recognized all of them.
2.  I redid Divya's steps for rebuilding the icon cache.  As before, it worked temporarily, but thr wrong icons reappears at the next restart.
3.  I also followed your steps to create a new administrative-user account.  And repeated #1 and #2. No difference.

Good try.

Regards,

Justin

FWIW, a friend of mine is seeing a similar issue with an HP LaserJet P2055 printer driver.  He recently replaced an old printer with this new one and kept the IP address and DNS name the same.  He connected to it using the IP address and the driver and Icon were installed properly no problem.  Then he decided he wanted to use the DNS name for the printer rather than the IP address.  When he deleted the printer and re-added it using the name, the Icon for the old printer showed up.  So now he has the new driver and the Icon for the old printer.

He tried Deleting the printer again, then deleted the Driver by going into Print Management, Print Servers/[computername] (local)/Drivers, right clicking the driver and clicking Delete. Then re-added the printer using the Name, but that didn't work either.

I'm not hijacking your post, so no need to try to give me answers unless you think it'll also help the OP.  I just wanted to let people know that others are having similar issues with incorrect icons in Devices and Printers.  (I really like that Windows 7 tries to display the correct icon for things, but I wish there was a way to manually change it when windows gets it wrong).

I have just upgraded from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7. I have a new Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 v2.0 and a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 v3.

Since spending most of the day loading software and updating drivers (scanner, webcam, video camera, DSLR) I noticed my mouse was slow to load at start-up. When I checked the D&P I also have the incorrect mouse displayed. The keyboard is correct, as is the wireless transeiver but the mouse shows up as a MS USB Dual Receiver Wireless mouse.

I have a brand new system and have tried the icon rebuild suggestion with no luck. I have tried the basic IntelliPoint configurations and resetting but my mouse is staying put.

Not a big issue, unless the mouse gets slower, but it is a bug all the same.

Any new ideas?

Hi Dave,

No new ideas from me.  It's like a lottery; sometimes the icons are correct; sometimes not.  Right now, the keyboard icon is correct (MS Wireless 7000); the mouse icon is incorrect (Generic MS USB).

I'll keep looking for solutions.

Justin
