What is causing my computer to run extremely slow, freeze, and keep the hour glass symbol and blue circle continuously on (Windows 10)?

My computer is barely functioning.  It is freezing up all the time and just really slow. I recently got Windows 10 but it was running slow and freezing before that and it hasn't changed or improved after installing Windows 10. My son cleared a lot out off the computer and I do not think he reinstalled or did everything necessary to bring the computer back after he cleaned the hard drive. He did this without my knowledge after he forgot his password.  I know the computer is missing many drivers now and who knows what else.

Hello,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community and providing us with the detailed description about the issue.

As per the description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with slow performance after installing Windows 10 on the system.

I certainly understand your concern and will try my best to help you.

There is a possibility that this issue might have occurred due to corrupt system files or possibility there is a virus in the system.

So to diagnose whether the system is virus free and there are no corruptions, I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

Try running System Maintenance Troubleshooter to get the problem automatically detected and fixed. Please follow the steps given below.

Run inbuilt system maintenance troubleshooter and check if it works. Please follow the steps given below.

  1. Press Windows + W keys on your keyboard to get the search option.

  2. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting.

  3. Now click on view all option.

  4. Click on System maintenance and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

Note: System maintenance troubleshooter looks for unused files and shortcuts that you clean up or remove so that your computer can run faster.

If the issue persists, follow method 2

Method 2:

To diagnose the problem whether any third party program or application is causing the conflict, I would suggest you to try “clean boot” and check if it helps.

Placing your system in “Clean Boot” state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Try to reboot the system and check if it helps.

If the issue persists, follow method 3

Method 3:

Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is virus free.

Microsoft Safety Scanner, please follow the steps in the link provided below.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note:
Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

If the issue still persists, follow method 4

Method 4:

How to use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files, please follow the steps in the link provided below.

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833?wa=wsignin1.0

Note: System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. This article describes how to run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8. If a Windows Resource Protection (WRP) file is missing or is corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected.

The above steps holds good for Windows 10 as well.
