Latest Windows Update (KB3194496) - Can't Login Anymore / Locked out because of update.

Today was literally **** for me! I updated to the latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1607 (KB3194496) and after installing/reboot I got faced with a login screen!

This was of course very strange as I had a local account with NO password, nor pin, nor any other kind of security measure, but the login screen appears requesting a password before I could login and access my computer.

Of course I tried to insert nothing which resulted in it just stating that I had to enter a password, then I tried my hotmail password which should NOT be linked to the account at all, but that also didn't work. I tried various other things until I noticed a pattern that even if I entered anything random it just stated Welcome but kept loading without saying that the password was incorrect or actually signing in.

So I was completely locked out of my computer, I couldn't even access any command prompt or password recovery as NOTHING was set after all.

In the end I had to recover my whole system which wasn't a fun experience and I pretty much lost a whole day because of it. I've got not idea to why this update is forcing users to have a password, but I do not want to update again but Windows is pretty much forcing the updates to install. So my question is how do I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advance for further information.

Very big problem now, i've set a password for my account in hopes that after the update it would recognize it but it did NOT!!!

Same problem as before, I can not login into my computer!!! How is it even possible that Windows releases an update  that does this?

And I can't even apply my previous fix as that doesn't work either anymore!

How would I solve this issue now?

Similar problem on two machines one running 64 bit, the other 32 bit. Both start normally and display the lock screen but, when I enter my password the wait symbol appears, stays for a long while and then just returns to the lock screen and waits for me to input my password. Just completely ignores password input.

I contacted Microsoft Support and the only thing they suggested me to do a full clean install of windows, preferably a format rather than just a refresh of windows.

This is of course very problematic and time consuming, I currently got it semi-fixed by doing a system recovery through first going into safe-mode and bypassing the password to then start the recovery before the update and disabling the windows updates via services.

Of course I do still want to receive updates from Windows, but if those updates lock me completely out of my own computer to the point the only suggestion would be to format. Then I prefer to just wait and stick on this working version of windows until I have the time and see fit to actually perform a format.

How did you bypass the password in safemode? Could you walk us through the process a bit more?

Step by step for all after update ready to install and restart:

1. delete folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave

2. search "regedit"

3. delete registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\ Schedule\ TaskCache\ Tree\ Microsoft\ XblGameSave

4. Re-run the update

Finally, after many times I stuck in login screen and do system restore many times, I can successfully install the update.

Good LUCK everybody.

For a reason the password entry does seem to "function" in safe-mode so even if you enter a "random" password it will just grant you access even if it's wrong. Or at least that's how I managed to "bypass" it.

I dont know. I just have same issue with you and used system restore more than 5 times to get my windows work again.

Then I search and found it in another forum.

I just try and it work. If we really have same issue, it work for you too.

Just try it. Backup your data first.

Alright sweet! I'll give it a shot sometime in the future once I do not require my computer as heavily as I do now these days and will report back!

Thanks either way for sharing :)

Ps: If you still remember/can find the forum you find this solution and could possible share it, then that also would be great!

I have 6 pcs with this exact problem

Affects

Domain Users

Local Users

login will return you back to login screen

Complete 100% reinstall on different hardware with latest ISO file

the problem comes straight back for those same users again.

I can boot into safe mode, login with the affected user, then reboot and login in normally.

however next reboot again cannot login
