Corrupted bootres.dll

Hi,

I ran "Automatic Repair" in Windows Recovery Menu and got message, that bootres.dll is corrupted and unrepairable (with details in SrtTrail.txt). Is there something I can do about it, or I need to do reinstall of W10?

This is the part of the SrtTrail.txt with Bootres.dll error:

Root cause found:
---------------------------
Boot critical file d:\boot\resources\custom\bootres.dll is corrupt.

Repair action: File repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x2
Time taken = 1766 ms

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code =  0x490
Time taken = 416718 ms

If your installation of Windows 10 is exhibiting strange behavior that doesn't seem to resolve through typical troubleshooting you may need to perform a "Repair Upgrade". This will reinstall windows over top of your existing installation and will preserve personal files and settings. Here is a detailed tutorial to follow

Hi Dominick. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Everything possible to start Windows including rebuilding the boot files is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

But you'd probably save time by doing the Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Make sure during the booted install to follow the illustrated steps to delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, then click Next to let it auto-create the needed partitions, format them and begin install - this makes it foolproof.

There is a step included to rescue your files first if they are not backed up properly using the bootable media here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

You will get and keep the best possible install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the linked tutorial. It's a better install than any amount of money could buy and a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thanks for reply.

I´ll try it today. If it won´t help (hopefully it will) I´ll backup my files and do a clean install as Greg suggested - that´s a safe bet.

Sumit - my W10 installation can boot just fine, but when I´m in the system I sometimes get random freezes and if I try to install/uninstall GPU drivers system freezes every time. I were messing with RAM timings earlier and got quite a lot of BSODs, so I think I have broken Windows to the point where I can´t install GPU drivers (only way that works is recovery point, that is the only way I can install GPU drivers).

So I´ll try to do a "Repair upgrade", if it won´t help I´ll do a clean install as Greg wrote. And if that won´t help, maybe my GPU is dying.

Thanks all!

So I tried it and the installation freezed in the middle of the process, needed to hard reset the pc. Old Windows 10 has succesfuly recovered and I got message that Windows could´t be updated error 0xC1900101 – 0x30018 Microsoft website says that this error corresponds to driver problem.

I will try to troubleshoot my system somehow, if I can´t get GPU drivers working properly I will either do proper clean install of W10 from Greg (that is going to help if the system/GPU driver is being dumb, but won´t help if the GPU is broken) or send my GPU to RMA.

@Wyndell Neptune - While it is possible to replace the bootres.dll file from another pc of the same version (eg 1803) I doubt it will solve the problem. I have just taken a copy of the dll from a system suffering this error and compared it to a working copy on another pc - the two files are byte for byte identical.

So I think the issue is that the EFI boot process itself is misconfigured and is looking for the file in a different location - and when it doesn't find the file it is reporting it as corrupted. I will report back if I find a fix that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows.

I'm having the same issue. I did replace take the bootres.dll from a working install, replaced the corrupted version. It solved the error, but did not entirely fix the underlying problem. SFScan shows that it is corrupt because some file code doesn't match. But, it has been a step in the right direction.
