0x80073bc3 Error on Windows 8.1 download

I have Windows 8 Pro on my Lenovo Y580. I have tried numerous times to download 8.1 Pro with Media from the Windows Store. I've tried removing my second SSD and any usb/Bluetooth devices. I do not have any other operating systems installed. I've uninstalled my eset antivirus. I've done a clean boot.

No matter what, it stops downloading at just over 50% and gives the 0x80073bc3 error. What does this error mean?

Hi Ryan,

I would suggest you to reset Windows store cache memory and check if it helps.

You can follow the steps to do so:

a) On the desktop screen, press Windows key + R key to open run box.

b) Type wsreset.exe and hit Enter.

Try to install Windows 8.1 again from Store and check if it resolves the issue.

If the issue still persists, then I would ask you to perform a hard shut down of the computer and provide us the logs for further assistance.

Note: Please check the private message.

Hope this helps. If you have any further queries/issues related to Windows, write to us and we will be glad to assist you further.

Having the exact same problem downloading the non-Pro version of Windows 8.1 on a Toshiba Satellite C855D.  The download gets to the point where it is about to install, and then no joy.  Got the following error code (quoted verbatim):

Installing

Getting the update ready

This app wasn't installed - view details

Something happened and Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed.  Please try again. Error code: 0x80073bc3

Tried the Windows Store reset method described above by Mahesh Kumar A, and it still did not work.  How do I proceed?

New try: Same fail

2) ) Asked MS help desk

They tweaked my PC remotely

New try: Same fail

3) Uninstall Norton 360

New try: Same fail

I still working with Windows 8.

Congratulations MS at least my system don't break and I could keep my Windows 8.

I have the same issue on a dell xps. After some try and error I also found a windows update that does not work and thus stayed in the pipline. Its the KB2756872. I tried for hours to solve this problem, because it might be connected to the 0x80073bc3, until now with no success. I tried all the tools and solutions available. Hope that Microsoft will fix this issue soon.

I received a direct message to send them a bunch of info. I have. I'll see what happens. Installing osx on my dell was easier than updating to 8.1!

MarcoZanoli,

I have exactly same issue as you. KB2756872 has NEVER installed on my Dell XPS8500. I have the same error code as you also when trying the upgrade from 8 to 8.1. I too believe that the issues are connected. Could you check to see if you can also run the "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" option in the "Settings/Change PC , Settings/General" options as I can't do that either and I'm sure it's all connected When I try to do it, I get a message saying "some files are missing -insert your media" or something similar. My situation is that I bought a Dell XPS8500 about 2 months before Windows 8 came out so got the option to upgrade as part of the deal when 8 came out. The PC would NEVER upgrade directly from Windows 7 to 8 using the upgrade assistant and I had to download the files on to USB stick and then only option that would work was a clean install. I could also never install the WIndows Media Upgrade from the store despite having a valid licence key, Every time I tried to do it, it just failed. With the KB2756872m it very briefly flashes saying that it 100% complete and then saying "failure configuring updates- reverting...." I've tried EVERYTHING -updating drivers, uninstalling sound cards etc, unplugging all external devices and nothing seems to work. Now not being able to upgrade to 8.1 is the last straw!!

Hacked off

Colin

Hallo Colin - I have a similar story indeed. My Dell XPS one 27 came with Win7 and an upgrade option. I upgraded after a while because there where issues with the computer that I hoped to solve through an update. It worked fine through the store - nevertheless I had to send in the computer later anyway because the issue continued. Dell changed the harddrive and the motherboard and I got it back with a clean win8. Unfortunately the first thing I noticed was that the win update did not work and it took me quite a while to figure out that the cause was KB2756872. I tried everything you did as well - exept a complete fresh installation. Since I did this already 4 times in the last couple of months I am sick of it and decided to wait for 8.1. Now, I am quite disappointed that it did not work. My conclusion: I will never buy a Dell computer again, and also never a All in One system again!

I don't think the problem is with Dell.

The problem is: Microsoft.

I'd three calls with MS about this problem and they didn't help.

One of the Engineer came to me with a discourse about: Windows work with all kind of PCs meanwhile Apple work with the same hardware, so is hard to achieve all the PCs...

Please, work with all kind of PCs is the Windows force and merit. Unless I did believe that.

If the costumer want to work only with one kind of hardware probably he'll go to the MS competitor

I had this problem on a laptop and the thing that was wrong was that the hard drive partition was not set to active. You need to start up program for formatting  and managing hard disk partitions and click on make partition active. Once I did this the Windows update file loaded and then the Windows 8.1 loaded from the Windows shop.
