Excel formula showing up as text not value??

In Excel

All of a sudden when I enter a formula that refers to another cell in Excel 2012 (for example =A23) the result does not show up but rather the actual formula shows up.  What has happened?

If a cell is formatted as text when you enter a formula, and if you then change the format to (for example) General, you'll still see the formula. You have to press F2 then Enter, or enter the formula anew, to see the result.
