Build 14267.1002: Lumia 550 battery not charging issue

Hi everyone,

Several Windows Insiders with a Lumia 550 have reported an issue where their phone no longer charges or connects via USB after upgrading to Build 14267.1002. As mentioned in an update to the flight build's blog post, there's some details we want you to be aware of while we actively investigate and address the situation.

Problem overview:

Lumia 550's are not charging after taking the 14267.1002 update on Windows Insider.

Once your battery is depleted, this can result in your phone getting into a reboot loop after you reconnect to a charger, and your phone not being recognized via USB on your computer.

Work around and solutions:

Skipping this build: If you have a Lumia 550, we recommend holding off going to this build. To change your ring:

  • Open the Windows Insider app.
  • Tap "Get preview builds".
  • Select a ring other than Fast.

If you weren't able to skip this build on your Lumia 550, please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Charging the battery

The phone should have at least 25% battery charge before moving onto Step 2 for recovering.

Method 1: [Removed based on feedback from those of you who indicated this was not working]

Method 2: If your battery level is very low (e.g. 5% or less) and find you're unable to charge your battery normally, here's steps some people have found helpful to get the battery to take a charge. Just note that these are manual and somewhat tedious:

  1. Turn the phone off if it's not already shut down.
    • Press and hold the Power button until Slide down to power off message appears on-screen, then swipe down.
    • If that doesn't work, press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons at the same time until you feel a vibration (about 10-15 seconds), then release the buttons. This will initiate restarting the phone.
    • You can also power off by removing and re-inserting the battery.
  2. Plug the phone into charger.
  3. Once the Windows logo shows up, press and hold the Power button until it restarts. Try to do this before it ever boots into the main OS.
  4. Important: Keep repeating step 3. While time consuming the phone will get a charge during the moments of initial start-up.
  5. After the phone gets enough charge, follow the instructions under Step 2 below for recovering the phone

Step 2: Recovering the phone

We recommend restoring back to the Current Branch on your phone by using the Windows Device Recovery Tool to reinstall Windows 10 Mobile.

  1. Connect your phone via a USB cable to your PC.
  2. Start the Windows Device Recovery Tool.
  3. Your phone won't be detected normally in the tool. Click "My device was not detected". Select Lumia.
  4. While the Windows Device Recovery Tool shows "Waiting for connection", restart your phone. To do this, press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons at the same time until you feel a vibration.
  5. Watch the Windows Device Recovery Tool because it should detect your device during its reboot sequence.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall the software.

If the Windows Device Recovery Tool needs to download the recovery image, your phone may reboot back into the OS. Once the image finishes downloading, reboot your phone again and it should begin reinstalling Windows 10 Mobile.

If you encounter any issues using the WDRT tool, including a situation where your device may not be recognized, please reference this how-to guide [http://aka.ms/devicerecovery] for instructions on how to proceed.

I'm unable to charge my drained Lumia 550 following the procedure in Step 1: Charging the battery.  Charging in "flashing mode" does NOT work for me. Charging started with 20-30% capacity over night using the original charger, ending in completely drained battery (phone getting into a reboot loop). I suppose "Method 2" doesn't help either.

I have now purchased another Lumia 550 and charge/swap batteries until a fixed build (post 14267) is made available.

Hey RuneF,

Very creative work around, indeed. We'll call it the unofficial "Method 3" how about? *smile*

With regards to charging in flashing mode and the troubles you had, hoping to get more details. Was it that you couldn't get into flashing mode or that when you did get into flashing mode it wasn't actually charging?

If the latter, how were you able to assess the battery capacity since the screen only shows the lighting bolt and gear?

Hi Mike,

I had used my 550 with 14267 for a couple of days when I noticed the charging issue in forums. When looking closer to my 550 it was drained to about 42% and I thought it would be smart to get into flashing mode and recharge to 100% during night. Next morning, instead of full charged it was drained empty and went into reboot loop when started normally (it rebooted for hours finally ending in continuous beeping sound).

The drained battery was later put into the new 550 (10586.00) and recharged to 100% during the day.

Now I look forward to next Redstone build. Reverting back to 10586 is no option☺

I noticed my phone would not charge after the update. I had 23% left when I tried step 1. It drained my battery within an hour. I am trying to go to step 2, but it won't recognize my device. I don't have enough power and Microsoft told me to do a backup before trying it. I don't have enough power to do that either. Any suggestions? I literally cannot try anything to restore to back before the update. I just got this phone two weeks ago. :(

Thanks

Same for me. No charging in flashing mode. It only loads the battery to 3% then the phone restarts.

Do i really have to buy another 550 to load my battery? :(

Alex, can you try "method 2" under the battery charging steps above as a means to bring your phone battery life back up? After you've done so, please follow the steps to use Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Hey Jennifer,

Under charging battery steps, please try "method 2" for getting charge on your battery. When you have enough charge, you'll need to use the Windows Device Recovery tool and pay particular attention to step 3 since it won't be detected by the software normally.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I tried the "method 2" above without success.

Let me explain what i have done:

1. Battery is completly drain

2. I Plug in the cable.

3. After some minutes (5-8) it starts to pin home screen. Battery charge shows 3%.

4. I restart the phone and open the recovery tool. Phone is recognized.

5. Battery is drain and it shutdown. --> Back to 3. (Thats the restart loop).

6. If i manage it to enter the flashing mode it does not load and shut off after ten minutes --> Back to 3.

But while i wrote this i relized that i have to bring my battery charge up with the few seconds after Initial restart :(

Hmmm....maybe you can send me a charged battery pack? That would things speed up dramatically *g*.

I cannot go through with step 2. It does nothing but show a battery signal even when you try and shut it down. I have tried several times. I cannot do a recovery either as it will not recogbize my phone.
