Clearing System Cache, does it help with performance problems?

I've had my Xbox 360 Slim for almost two years now. I've downloaded tons of demos, trials, updates, I've installed and uninstalled many games, I've downloaded a lot of DLC, avatar items, themes, etc. and recently my Xbox 360 Slim's performance has been less than stellar. Everything seems to take a long time to load... I was curious if clearing my system' cache would improve anything at all.

Someone told me it might be my internet (how?), but I have a 25Mbps download/5Mbps upload connection, so I don't see how it can be my internet...

Transfer any profile information or content you want to keep, to a Configured USB Flash Drive & Format the main HDD.. Transfer everything back to main HDD & see if the performance, is any better..

..

If it's a online multiplayer delay between matches etc.. It's a possibilty, that it is your internet connection too... Throughput Speeds [Cable] or Bandwidth Speeds [DSL] aren't the issue... It's the latency or ping times, that effect multiplayer games loading etc..

It's the dashboard performance mostly. It takes for ever to load up when I turn the console on. When I go to My Games or any part of the dashboard, the list takes forever to load. Etc.

Format the HDD then mate... The drive might need to be defragmented & formatting the HDD, will fix this problem... After you format the HDD, download your profile from XBOX Live! again, after you transfer files back over to HDD..

Formatting the HDD sounds like a lot of work, plus I don't have a USB flash. I was thinking about clearing my system's cache because it's quick and easy.

Dont format the HDD yet do what you originally said and clear the system cache this may help with performance issues especially within the dashboard itself. Also go through all your content and delete anything you dont actually need.

Only format your HDD if you have no other option.

Nano you shouldn't be telling users to format there HDDs as a first option, start small and work your way to that if you see no other fix to the problem.

I misread the thread as; Clearing System Cache, doesn't help with performance problems?

..

This has happened to me before though & Formatting the HDD, was the only option, to system performance etc...

Your supposed to backup & format every now & then anyway... That's why, you can re-download content again...

..

Clearing the system cache, only removes the game updates & fixes minor issues in games etc...

Seeing how it's a dashboard performance issue on HDD... I personally, would backup & format the HDD..

Actually clearing the system cache can help with Dashboard issues. As said start small and work your way up. Telling people to format the HDD as a first option is not right and should not be the first thing attempted.

Formatting the HDD is not really required for any System Maintenance. I've done it once or twice while getting rid of an older HDD (mostly to clear any personal information). If you want to simple clear the Cache that can be also found under the Device Options (System Settings/ Memory).

Clearing the Cache simply Deletes all Temporary Files (Game Updates and such). It can help every now and then but given most Games don't really "need" it. You will have to Download any Game Title Update again afterwards. A word of warning though, some Game like ME3 store an Achievement Tracker on the Cache. If you Clear the Cache it can "reset" your Stats towards an Achievement in ME3 or Games that use a similar method.

So "clearing the cache" shouldn't be the first option then, if it deletes achievements & achievement tracker on new games like Mass Effect 3...

Backing up all data & formatting the HDD, sounds like a better option to me then..

..

I've had only one RROD [overheated] since 2007 & I am still using the original console & 20GB HDD today... Far exceeding the warranty period, for a genuine console & accessory...

[/quote]I wouldn't say Formatting is a good idea either. After Formatting the Cache is wiped just like the rest of the HDD. Clearing a Cache is fine as long as the User checks for anything smaller it might effect. For example, if you clear your Cache, you are also going to loose the last place you were watching a specific DVD. Is that too terrible? Naw, I think not.

As for the Achievement Tracker in ME3, it only Deletes the Placard that tracks the Achievements, not the actual Unlocked Achievement itself. Fort example, "kill X out of X" will be Reset to "0 out of X". There were a few other Games that did this but they are very few and very far between.
