How to re-install Windows 10 without a product key (Digital License / Entitlement)

Technical Level : Basic

Summary

Your computer's disk drive crashed or for whatever reason Windows 10 became unusable.

Here is how you can re-install Windows 10 without the use of a product key.

Details

If your device is still function you can check what type of activation you have.

To find out more about your product key click:  Start / Settings / Update & security and in the left hand column click on ‘Activation’. In the Activation window you can check the “Edition” of Windows 10 that is installed, Activation status and the type of “Product key”.

Digital entitlement is the previous method (Prior to the Anniversary edition) of activation in Windows 10 that doesn't require you to enter a product key when re-installing Windows 10 on the same computer / device.

  • Starting with the November 2015 Update, Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using some Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys. For more info, see the section Activating Windows 10 (Version 1511 or higher) using a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 product key in this topic.

  • Starting with the August 2nd 2016 release of the Anniversary edition (Version 1607) some subtle but important changes have been made. Most important is the ability to link your Microsoft account to the digital license on your device."Activating Windows 10 after a hardware configuration change
If you made a significant hardware change to your device (such as replacing the motherboard) Windows 10 might no longer be activated. If you're running Windows 10 (Version 1607) and added your Microsoft account and linked it to the digital license on your device, you can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. For more info, see Using the Activation troubleshooter.

(Available through the web portal for your program.)
You bought a new device running Windows 10.

Digital entitlement was the previous method (prior to the release of the Anniversary Edition / version 1607) on August 2nd 2016) of activation in Windows 10 that also did not require you to enter a product key.

For reference purposes the earlier Digital entitlement information is listed below for those who have yet to upgrade to the Anniversary Edition.

  • Starting with the November Update, Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using some Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys. For more info, see the section Activating Windows 10 (Version 1511 or higher) using a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 product key in this topic.

Activation:

If your device is Digitally Entitled / Licensed you can simply re-install Windows 10. When prompted to enter a product key, click the link directly below the box where the key would normally be entered to skip entering a key and continuing with the installation.

Or

How do I use my Digital license when reinstalling Windows 10: During the reinstall process just select the "I'm reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC" option located in the bottom left of the window where it ask you to enter a Product Key.

Create the installation media: How to use Microsoft's Download web site to download an official Windows 10 ISO file, create installation media and activate Windows 10

Once the install has completed and the computer can connect to the Internet Windows 10 will automatically be activated.

Reference: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/activation-in-windows-10

Note: A sharp eyed individual will notice the ambiguous difference between a retail boxed version of Windows 10 from the Microsoft / “Windows Store” and a retail box version of Windows 10 purchased from “an authorized retailer”.

Buy it from the Microsoft Store and you are digitally entitled, buy it from a Retailer and you need a key to re-install and activate Windows 10 (Example: your disk drive fails and you need to re-install Windows 10).

I called the Microsoft Store and asked if this was a typing error in the article named:

Activation in Windows 10

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/activation-in-windows-10

Their reply: This is not an error, product purchased from their store have a unique product key that is traceable to a purchase from their store. Be assured that the key inside the box is not known by any Microsoft employee, however the product ID number identifies it as a Microsoft store purchase and therefor you have “Digital Entitlement”. Windows 10 can be re-installed up to 4 additional times and automatically activated on the same device it was originally installed on. Should your computer become unusable you need to call the store before re-installing your store purchased “Retail” version on another computer.

I have no idea how to replace parts or build computers, but is it possible that with the motherboard replaced it may change the "same PC or other device" that it can installed on in such a way that windows will no longer recognize it as the same PC? That was my first thought, I know you wrote this a while ago, but I'm just wondering what worked for you.

I have not taken that extreme step to swap the motherboard.

But my desktop went down - "Switching off as your processor is over heating"

I checked the fans are working - so took it apart. Applied the thermal conductive paste and assembled it back. But still cannot it up - so will now try a Windows 10 ISO, from a USB. The BIOS however can recognize all the disks connected.

If there is a better way - please let me know.

thanks

Jeevan

When installing Windows 10, the digital license associates itself with your device's hardware. So, if you make significant changes, such as replacing your motherboard, Windows will no longer find a license that matches your computer.

So, since windows no longer finds a license, how can I help it find my valid windows 10 license?

I have just changed my desktop motherboard and CPU (same hard drives, video card, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.).

My old setup freezes frequently and I can not pinpoint what the problem is. I will be sending the parts for recycling.

After clicking on "I have changed hardware recently" I get the message "Select this device from below", then I select my computer with "This is the device I'm using right now". After confirming I get the message "Unable to activate Windows. We can’t reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later."

All the direction I get is to "Try again later". Windows does not tell me that my digital license is not valid on the new motherboard.

I did not find any specific statement on Microsoft's website saying something like "if you change your motherboard your license is no longer valid". I am sorry if I am reading this wrong, but "Windows will no longer find a license that matches your computer" does not mean that the license is no longer valid, it may mean that windows needs help finding the license or that I should follow some procedure like phone activation.

Please clarify: Is it possible to use my digital license after a motherboard change? Should I just "try again later"?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi,

I faced the same issue after change of mother board.

Followed up with Microsoft with the purchase proofs etc - they simply disabled my previous key.

(as I had bought it on eBay)

So was left with no option but to repurchase - but this time, created an account on www.live.com and stored my new license there as well. As Microsoft claims it will help in future misadventures like these.

So "hackers" - you have another source of information to hack.

thanks

Jeevan

When an O.E.M P.C. (like a lenovo or h.p. or any brand) is bought with a pre-installed O.S. (operating system) the license/product key is mostly by default embedded in the motherboard's BIOS. That's the reason it's not a necessary step to enter a key during the initial installation and also is the cause of licence/product key loss if M.B. fails or been replaced. The O.S. (a manufacturer's factory default Windows version with embedded drivers etc for the specific p.c. build) is held in an O.E.M partition in local drive C: and some times it's hidden, others is not. This partition will be used to create a recovery media U.S.B. of at least 16 gb or a recovery media in many DVD's, using the "Recovery Drive" tool (accessed by typing it's name in Windows search), with the check box "back up system files in the recovery drive" definitely checked. This will be your equivalent to a retail Win DVD, but because it's configured for the specific p.c. build it's not easy to be used in a much different hardware configuration. It's not completely impossible but some higher than novice computer skills are needed to be accomplished. Also if you create a Microsoft account and log with it in Windows, you can associate your account with the specific digital licence or product key and never lose it again. That's the right way to activate and back up your O.S. and license/product key. In that way, when a local drive or motherboard fails you can download a Win ISO image and the associated with the Microsoft account licence/key activates it automatically.

Read this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/12440/windows-10-activation

and expand the topics:

1. What activation method do I use, a digital license or a product key?

2. Checking activation status

3. Activating after reinstalling Windows 10

and also read this:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/10738/windows-10-get-help-with-activation-errors

Anyway, let's suppose that you'd lost the licence/product key. If there's still a Windows O.S. in your possession (a retail DVD or an O.E.M partition in local drive C: or a recovery media) you can buy a new one from Microsoft for approximately (depends on country region and local market prices) 30-40 $. If the site is complicated or difficult in understanding for you, call them. They are qualified and can solve most of the problems. Hope this is helpful, not only for you but for others too. I'd tried to keep it as simple as it can be.

My Laptop crashed and when I eventually got it restarted I had not only lost my data but it had regressed from Windows 10 back to Windows 7. I understand from other comments that the WIN 10 Digital License associates itself with the Laptop / PC Hardware. As I haven't upgraded / changed any Hardware why am I unable to reinstall Windows 10 without paying for a new copy?
