Hi SenojNWJ,

-       Since when are you facing this issue?

-       Were you able to install updates earlier on this computer?

-       Does this happen with any particular update or all the updates?

-       Do you have any security software installed on your computer?

Firstly I would suggest you to reset Windows Update components on your computer and check if it helps you fix the update issue.

You may also try following the article below to reset Windows Update components.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Also you may try to put the computer in a clean boot state and check if you can install the updates without errors.

Access the link below and follow the steps to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot and then installing the updates, then follow the steps mentioned in the above KB article to narrow down the exact source.

Also in the same article, see the section on how return your computer to a Normal startup mode by following the steps under “Reset the computer to start as usual” and put it back to Normal startup.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Thanks and Regards,

Srinivas R Microsoft Support.

Hi

It did it when I was installing updates yesterday - not sure which one but I was installing these updates in one session in this order:

KB980182, KB976264, KB977863, KB978637, KB979099, KB980302

I think it was during KB980182 that I got the blue screen. Windows update says it installed successfully though and it hasn't done it since.

I have never had BSOD for any previous updates

I have AVG Free Antivirus installed

If it only did it once do I need to go through the other steps you suggested?

Thanks

Update:

I have had 2 blue screens thismorning. One while running windows media player (music), and another while starting system restore.  I have just run system restore to take me back to before the updates above and I'll see if the blue screens stop I guess unless anyone has any other ideas? Won't be re-installing those "critical" updates that's for sure...

SenojNWJ,
I would suggest that you uninstall the updates.  Then install them one at a time and run your PC between the updates and see if you have problems.  Also I would suggest making sure that your hardware drivers are all up to date.  Go to the manufacturer websites for your hardware makers (video card, sound card, etc...) and get the most recent drivers.

Hi Mike

Are you able to ascertain anything from the error reports I have posted above? Do they at least point to a software problem rather than hardware?

I ran the updates one by one after doing a system restore and had no blue screen for about a day of normal use. Then yesterday when I went to shut down the system, I got a blue screen just after I gave the shut down command. This was maybe 5 minutes after installing Quicktime free player.

I have all the latest drivers for my hardware installed already.

SenojNWJ,
Just from what is posted I can't narrow down a cause.  Now if you post some (30 - 50 lines) of the minidump file, that may help point to a cause.  Also you can look at your Event Viewer and see if there are any errors showing up in there.
Since it happened right after installing Quicktime, you may want to remove it and test for a day or two.
