Bluetooth Switch Grayed Out (Windows 8)

Hi,

I'm having an issue with my bluetooth on a Windos 8 upgrade laptop.  I'm using Intel's Centrino Advanced-N 6235 (driver version 15.5.6.48).  The bluetooth switch in wireless settings is grayed out in the off position.  It appears three bluetooth related services are running normally (Bluetooth OBEX Service, Bluetooth Device Monitor, Bluetooth Support Service).  I've tried the following:

1.  Installing OEM recommended drivers and software
2.  Installing the most recent drivers and software from Intel
3.  Running the hardware troubleshooter
4.  Running the network troubleshooter
5.  Uninstalling and reinstalling the network card from device manager
6.  Uninstalling all bluetooth related software/drivers and letting Windows install drivers automatically
7.  Uninstalling all wireless card/bluetooth software and letting Windows install drivers automatically
8.  Installing Windows 7 drivers and software in compatibility mode

I really have absolutely no clue as to what else to try to get my bluetooth to work as it did in Windows 7.

Other information that may be helpful:
Laptop:  Sager NP9170
OS:  Windows 8 Pro
Network Card:  Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 + Bluetooth
Attempted connections: phone, wireless headset

From your issue description I understand that, Bluetooth option in wireless settings is grayed out. I really appreciate your technical expertise in performing many troubleshooting steps to fix the issue.

Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?

 

Let’s follow these methods and check if it fixes the issue.

 

Method 1: Switch on the Bluetooth key and go to wireless settings, check if enables the Bluetooth options.

 

Method 2: Visit the manufacturer web site and install the Chipset Drivers for windows 8.

Method 3: Install the correct drivers for your operating system.

If you are running 32-bit operating system, download and install 32-bit drivers. Similarly, if you are running 64-bit operating system, download and install 64-bit drivers.

 

To know, if your PC is running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows, refer to the following steps:

 

Press Windows Key+ Pause Break key, it will open the basic information about computer window.

 

a.    If "64-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows 8.

 

b.    If "32-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 32-bit version of Windows 8.

Hi,

I have sony vaio SVE15115 64 bit laptop. I'm not getting option to turn on bluetooth as option is graded out on my windows 8 Pro.

Please suggest possible solutions.

I have the same problem on ASUS R500A Series K55A laptop (Built-in Bluetooth™ V3.0).

Went through all steps the original poster went through except I am using these drivers:

Atheros Wireless Lan Driver and Application Version  V10.0.0.77 (WLAN_Atheros_Win8_64_Z100077)

Atheros BlueTooth driver Version  V8.0.0.214 (Bluetooth_Atheros_Win8_32_64_Z800214)

Unfortunately, your Method 1 cannot work since the problem is exactly that the switch is grayed out !

Very frustrating indeed !

Hello,

I am using  SONY VAIO VPCEH3AEN 64 bit laptop. I'm not getting option to turn on bluetooth, The option is graded out on my windows 8 Ent. Even I could use my Wifi.

Please suggest possible solutions.

I have the same problem. I'm using a Sony SVS15118FXB running Win8 x64.  The SVS15118FXB uses the Intel Advanced-N 6235 chip for wireless features, including Bluetooth.  WiFi works fine.  I loaded the latest Bluetooth drivers from Intel's Web site (BT_3.0.1304_e64.exe).  I tried Sony support.  Their position was to downgrade to Windows 7.  REALLY?!

 

The Registry entries involved seem to be BthAvrcpTg, BthHFEnum, bthhfhid, BTHMODEM, BTHPORT, bthserv, and BTHSSecurityMgr.  I believe the new driver can create entries it needs, but cannot delete or change entries if they already exist.  Since deleting the old drivers does not seem to delete the Registry entries, the new driver cannot properly write the new Registry entries required.  The three Bluetooth services needed are installed and running.

 

The hardware is obviously present and working properly.  What does "Change PC Settings" look at to determine if the Bluetooth switch should be enabled?  This should be an easy fix, if the information were provided.  PLEASE HELP!

I've been having this same problem, and apparently so have other Windows 8 users according to Google searches. It seems to be affecting computers who upgraded from WIndows 7, like me. Really need Microsoft to fix this - the only solution you've offered is downloading the latest drivers, which I've done and doesn't help.

I find it very frustrated as well. Just bought a brand new Sony VAIO SVP1321C5E with windows 8 Pro and got everything setup including the Bluetooth vaio mouse. I want to backup my ultrabook before things like this happens and I got a message to reboot the machine. And so I did. Afterwards I can't use my mouse anymore and the Bluetooth option is grayed out. Installed drivers for Bluetooth and wireless which are downloaded from the official Sony website and still the Bluetooth option is grayed out. Please give advise how to continue.

You may want to try taping off the #51 pin on the Intel 6235, It has worked for me on a Toshiba P775 laptop. I would get a grayed out blue tooth switch on Win 8 Pro. I had read about the #20 pin but figured out that is for the WiFi. Found a datasheet on the DHXA-195, it had listed pin #51 for BT_DISABLE or 3.3V. 
Please follow any and all safety precautions when working on a computer and electronics, and that you accept any and all consequences when modifying them. 
I am also running the latest software and drivers from Intel.

I would appreciate it if Microsoft actually took the time to address this issue. My computer model, for reference, is an ASUS X401A-RBL4. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and did a clean install, downloading all necessary drivers from the ASUS website. I've downloaded the latest Bluetooth drivers, uninstalled, and reinstalled, and it continues to remain greyed out.

Yet another user here with the same problem.  I'm using the Intel Ultimate N 6300.  I thought this was related to WIndows 7 upgrade to WIndows 8, so I tried reformating drive and doing a "clean" install of Windows 8.  Did not fix the issue.

I've downloaded latest driver from Intel, that does not help.

I'm pretty technically savvy if there is a fix I can do with registry, etc.
