Is there an icon restore program for Windows 8?
You mean position or things have really gotten scrambled and icons are missing?

Sorry for the delayed response. If the desktop icons position is displaced, you may select auto arrange settings for the same. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Right-click on the desktop (between icons to get the desktop context menu, not on an icon itself).
  2. Click on the View option.
  3. Choose Auto arrange icons on the menu.

While Auto Arrange is now disabled, Windows 8 will not randomly shuffle your desktop icons. If this is not what you are looking for then do reply so we can help you further.

No this is not what I mean. I know auto arrange is the MS arrangement. I keep auto arrange unchecked but sometimes MS moves the icons around.  I want to prevent this from happening.  There is a program that can be downloaded from the Internet that worked very well on Windows XP. It does not state that it is for Windows 8.  Shall I try it anyway?

Which program are you referring to?

 

Under the same settings I suggested earlier, please check if Align icons to grid is unchecked. If so, check the same and see if it helps.

Icon Restorer is good, but I use UltraMon for this. 

 

UltraMon has several other options I find really useful.
