How to get a foot pedal recognized by Windows 7 in XP mode

I would suggest you to visit manufaturer’s website and check for latest updates.

You may also install drivers manually.

The foot pedal is an "Infinity IN-USB-2".
I've tried for drivers, but apparently none are available;  it's simply a matter of plug and play.
Just to let you know, the same pedal works fine under W7.  It's only when I try to use it in XP Mode
on the same computer that nothing happens.

While I have your attention, does this sentence have any meaning for you, "MS Virtual PC has no support for USB HID devices"? 
I'm just wondering whether MS realises there is a problem sharing USB devices with W7/XP Mode?
The only reason I ventured into W7 (I didn't go anywhere near Vista) was I understood programs that I knew would not work in W7 would work under XP Mode, and in fact for the most part this has turned out to be true. 
But the foot pedal problem in XP Mode, for me, is a deal-breaker.

I'm not sure of your connection with Microsoft, but do you know if there are any service packs planned for XP Mode in the near future?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem with the same foot pedal and have not found a solution.  I'm hoping that by adding to this topic we can get someone at Microsoft - Fouzan - to find a solution.  Not having the ability to use a foot pedal when you do transcription work makes things a bit IMPOSSIBLE.

I agree with Kadish52 -- I love Windows 7 and was thrilled to find I could run the virtual machine with the xp OS.  Unfortunately the inability to use the foot pedal has me rethinking how I feel about Windows 7 and the Virtual XP.
A fix would be nice.

Hi, Perriwinkle.  I just popped by this site to see if Fouzan had gotten around to responding to my last post.  Not sure why he bothered asking me the questions he did if he had no intention of getting back to me. 
I as yet haven't found an answer to the foot pedal XP Mode problem.  I've gone back to using my XP-loaded notebooks to get around the difficulty, and only use my W7 machine when I feel like some variety, or want to look at the beaut pictures in slideshow.
I've asked at least three people who are IT savvy to look into the problem, and all have told me I will NOT be able to use the foot pedal in XP Mode.  I guess we're stuck with the situation at the present time, but I'll keep researching on the net and leave a post here for you if I discover any wonder cure.

I have been researching this quite a bit recently as well.  I too thought Win 7 would work for me because of XP mode, but this isn't the case.  The foot pedal, even though it connects to a USB port, is not actually classified as a USB connection which is why it doesn't appear in the USB list at the top of XP mode.  It is actually considered a HID (Human Interface Device) and I have recently discovered that HID will not work in XP mode regardless of what you try simply because the technology is not set up to support outside devices other than those such as true USB (mouse/keyboard/etc).  That would make this true for any device such as foot pedals, joysticks/game controls, etc.  (If any of this is incorrect, please let me know as this is strickly from weeks of research at various sites/forums). 

As someone mentioned above, the foot pedal is a deal breaker as I am a transcriptionist and this is a must have.  My dilemma is that the platform I use for work is internet based and it will not work on I8 (Internet Explorer 8), only I6 & I7.  What I've found from research/trial/error is that Win 7 only supports I8.  Prior to reading that article, I had tried installing I7 stand alone, but this caused severe OS instability and eventually I had to reinstall Win 7.  I like Win 7 for my personal use, so I would hate to have to uninstall it and use XP (not to mention the waste of money on the OS and other misc new software bc what I had before wasn't compatable).   

I am in need of an alternative way of running XP for the sole purpose of running I7 with HID support.  

-  My MOBO/CPU both support virtualization and I've read in the MOBO owner's manual that you can set up 2 partitions and run 2 separate OS that way.  I'm still researching this and it wouldn't bother me that I would have to restart the PC to swith OS bc I would only need 1 at a time.  I'm unclear on the restrictions that would come with this still such as would these run completely separate (not like XP mode), or would I still have problems reading the HID?

- I have heard mention of Virtualbox, but I have not looked into this much.  If anyone has used this I'm curious to know how it works.  Is it a secure system protected by my antivirus (I handle processing and delivery of legal records so security is a must).  Will it actually read the HID (I've read that it does, but confirmation would be nice)?  

Any suggestions/feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks! 

 

Hi, Csyrith.  I understand you're a transcriptionist.  I'm in the same business, too, but a court reporter.  I run FTR recorder in XP, as the software is not compatible with W7, and the foot pedal not working in XP Mode is not acceptable.  I've tried mostly everything, but still no go.  MS has, however, released an Update for W7 XP Mode, and you can get some details about it here: http://lifehacker.com/5497316/windows-xp-mode-no-longer-requires-virtualization-hardware.  But don't get too excited, as I have downloaded the update already and my pedal still does not work.

I do, however, have another solution for you.  I have several computers and I don't mind experimenting with the older ones.  I've found dual booting XP and Windows 7 is the best answer to our problem. I took a machine which had XP SP3 already installed.  I partitioned the hard drive using free software available at this site http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/download.htm and loaded W7 onto the repartitioned new hard drive. After you have gone thru the mechanics of partitioning etc and you finally reboot, you'll be faced with the option of loading W7 (which it seems to default to) or moving the cursor up and choosing XP.  It works like a charm.  You have 20 seconds in which to choose which OS you want to load.  I'm sure I can even make XP be the default, if I tried hard enough.  I've tried all my apps in XP (including pedal) and everything operates perfectly, and you have the option of using the new beaut Windows 7 platform when it takes your fancy.

I'm by no means an IT guru, but by following the instructions carefully, I was able to get my computer dual-booting relatively smoothly.  The only caveat is thatXP must already be loaded on the machine.  I tried it in reverse, loading XP on a preloaded W7 in dual boot mode, and it was not pretty.  Let me know if you need any other advice.  John.

Using a serial footpedal with a DB9 connector going to a USB to serial adapter will work.  The USB adapter creates a serial port on the main host OS, so the XP mode will recognize the COM Port.

 

What a complete nightmare this has been.  My 'techie' at my main contract said I had to have VMWare to run their software since it's only compatible with XP. I bought it, went through incredible hassle to get it up and running, only to find out the whole foot pedal thing won't work. I guess the only answer is to dump the VMWare, kiss off the $250+ it took me to get there and do the partition thing. I thought I was being pro-active getting a newer machine before the old reliable one crashed but it's the biggest mistake I've ever made. I hate this new system and you can't even let Microsoft know without going through all that support nonsense!  GRRRR!!!

Virtual Machine won't do it.

To run Windows XP from within Windows 7 AND have it recognize your USB foot pedal, you need to use VirtualBox:

VirtualBox is the same concept as Windows VM (running XP from within Windows 7), but unlike Windows VM, you will need the Win XP CD-ROM (with CD key, of course) as you normally would to perform a clean installation of Windows. I do medical transcription and need XP as well. I run Win XP using VirtualBox from within Windows 7, and it recognizes my foot pedal fine now.
