Cannot open or extract zip files.

This is the first time I've attempted to extract compressed files on my new machine. I have several zip files that will not extract. When I attempt to extract them, I get a message saying:

"Cannot complete the compressed (zipped) folders extraction wizard.

The compressed (zipped) folder is empty.
Before you can extract files, you must copy files to this compressed (zipped) folder.

To close this wizard, click Finish."

The properties of the zip files show that they are 100+ Mb, so they don't appear to be empty from that standpoint.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
Answer
Answer
Try 7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/

The files may have been compressed in a format Windows cannot deal with.
