All my files seem to be hidden in Windows 7 - HELP!!!

I did a repair install of windows 7 because my computer was acting funny. When the computer restarted it seemed as though my files have dissapeared!! Nothing shows up if I look in a folder but if I right click and select properties it shows the number if files in the folder. Can someone help me? I know the files are on my computer, but they aren't appearing!!

Answer

Set hidden files to show up then you should see them all.  Then you will be able to investigate the reason before resetting them to "not hidden"

Control panel, Folder Options, View, 7 lines down, Show hidden files, folders & drives

If the "missing" files & folders do appear, then select them in Windows explorer at the level of

C:\Users\YourUserName\My documents [and then again for desktop, My Music etc]

and press right-click, Properties then clear the Hidden property checkbox near the bottom of that dialog box.  It will ask if you want to do this for all the contents of the sub-folders, say yes.

[Doing this at the level of c:\users\YourUserName\My documents etc will prevent you from accidentally unhiding hidden system folders as you might then get into all sorts of hideous complications]
