Windows 10 install error C1900101-30018

Hi, I recently tried upgrading to windows 10 from windows 7 (64 bit), it downloaded it ok, but when it restarted and was on the install screen when it reached about 27% finished it came up with this error with something along the lines of "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" and would then reboot itself back to windows 7. Once it was rebooted it gave me this error code C1900101-30018. I have searched on the internet and have not found a solution. My specs are:

CPU: AMD A8 6600K

GPU: ASUS R7 260X

RAM: 8GB

Motherboard: MSI A78M-E35

HDD: 1TB A solution would be great, thank you.

EDIT:

I would like to provide an update to those who have had the same problem and those who gave solutions, firstly thank you all those who have suggestions on ways to fix this problem, however none of them worked for me. I did however fix this issue by removing my graphics card and deleting the drivers for it, then i did most of Andre's suggestions, disabling my antivirus (Avast), removing all none necessary external devices (headphones and even my wireless card after the download was complete) etc..

So to all those who are having the same issue and have not tried installing windows 10 with your graphics card removed I would try this method.

Furthermore I am so far enjoying windows 10 and hope that it does not come into any problems.

Thank you again.

Tom

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
  • Restart a few times and try again.
  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
  • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
  • Do a clean boot and try again.
  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both and attempt setup again.
  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi and proceed with the installation.
  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account
  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disc, printers, non-essential devices).

If you are installing Windows 10 using Windows Update, try the following:

    1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

    2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                               net stop wuauserv

                               net stop cryptSvc

                               net stop bits

                               net stop msiserver

    3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                              ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

                              ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Typethe following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

                            net start wuauserv

                            net start cryptSvc

                            net start bits

                            net start msiserver

    5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.

Andre

No offense, but you're kidding me, right?  Microsoft expects 1 billion people to upgrade using this process?

So what happens to all the existing applications when you do the image... they all go away, correct? If that's the case it doesn't seem to be a viable solution.

How i can update with ISO, if it requires to enter serial number???

My update also crashed twice with the same error (win 8.1 Pro x64, Lenovo G580 laptop), i  thought "ok, i  will make clean installation with ISO", but no way, i need serial number to install ISO.  So now i cannot get my free windows 10 upgrade in any way, its crashing via windows update, and it requires serial number via ISO.

Do I have to do all of these things or can they all individually be solutions to the problem?

I thought the upgrade was supposed to be easy now I know why its free, you get what you pay for I suppose.

At several hours per try, this is getting old.  I've tried everything listed above except using an ISO image----I guess that is next.  It hangs every time at 6% through installing features and drivers.   I left it overnight one time----it is definitely hung and not going to recover.  When I restart the computer it restores win 8.1, and usually has an error (system_service_exception, to time) starting windows 8.1.  Other times it boots and then shortly after I log in, the system hangs.

i've renamed the two directories, disconnected the network, disabled the network adaptors, but it does eye same thing every time (4 times now).

and then when I go to try again, it downloads the update again (isn't it still lying around on the machine somewhere?).  And. The final blow is when Win 8.1 starts, it starts windows update which hangs the machine unlessI kill it promptly.  Not a great update experience (this is on a 15 month old Dell all-in-one).  I'm about to give up.  Anything else I can try?

I got something else you may try. I absolutely recommend this method, because this is the way how I got to finally upgrade to Windows 10 without errors:

You have to do what is called a "Clean Boot". If you don't know what that is or how to perform it, check out the following URL:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

It tells you how to perform a clean boot, either for Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 7.

This method worked for me, so I hope you find this useful too. Good luck!

PD: Don't forget to install the drivers after you finished installing!

Unfortunately, the clean boot didn't work for me. My install is stopping at 40% with 23% of "Installing Drivers and Features" completed, and then get a "Windows could not configure one or more system components" error. Then the rollback to Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and the update reporting the C1900101-30018 error. These are the exact symptoms reported for one of the earlier pre-builds for insiders. The solution there was to remove NET Framework 3.5 but that hasn't helped here either. I've also tried all of the Win 10 upgrade recommendations (updating drivers, uninstalling AV, etc.) but nothing has worked. It appears that Microsoft has once again released what is still an unstable beta version on end users. Worst upgrade experience I've had in 30 years as a computer user.
