KB4053577 Adobe Flash Security Update

I have an HP Pavilion G series i3 M370 laptop with an Intel HD Graphics chip. My laptop was originally Windows 8.1 and was upgraded to Windows 10 at the initial Windows 10 rollout. It is the 64 bit version of Windows 10. Since yesterday's windows update when I try to run video content on the UK BBC website I get an error whereby the video runs but I get random green rectangular blocks disrupting the video. This occurs whether the video is an embedded video on the news website or when I try to run BBC iPlayer. I have checked this with Chrome, Firefox and Edge and all display the same problem. If I access video content on Youtube or say the Guardian newspaper website the video plays correctly. I'm guessing that the Adobe Flash update KB4053577 has caused the problem. I've uninstalled this and also uninstalled Flash Player and re-installed both. This has not fixed the problem. I appreciate this may be the BBC's problem in the way they use Flash Player but everything was working prior to yesterday's update. Can I ask if anyone else has experienced the issue and if they have achieved a fix?

Hi Jamie,

This issue might have caused by a corrupted user account. For us to isolate the issue, we would like to know the following:

  • Is this only isolated on one website or all videos on different websites?
  • Have you encountered any error messages?
  • Have you tried checking if the issue persists on other user account? If not, we suggest that you create a new local account and name it as Test. Check if the issue persists on the new user account.
  • Have you tried uninstalling the recent security update installed on your PC? If not, uninstall the recent security update, and then check if the issue persists.

Hi Janeane,

This was only occurring on the BBC website. Both embedded content and also BBC iPlayer. I did not receive any error messages. The video would play but the images were corrupted with green rectangular blocks throughout the images. Sound was fine. As you suggested I created a new local account on my laptop and the same problem was still there using this account.

I uninstalled flash player and also uninstalled the flash security update as well as an earlier flash security update from 21 November 2017. I rebooted the laptop after each uninstall and tried BBC video each time but this did not fix it. I decided to uninstall the other updates from yesterday and when I uninstalled the windows security update KB4048955 and rebooted this update was reinstalled and the BBC videos work correctly. So the issue is solved at present. I will not re-install flash player unless I need it.

Thanks for your response.

Similar issue with Defense Collaboration Service (DCS), since the patch (KB4053577) was installed this weekend. Adobe Flash is used to build the conference session and the audio configuration. Affects IE 11 and Firefox. Google Chrome works, but it is not the preferred browser (IE 11). Attempted to add the links, for DCS, to the Flash Player ADVANCED, TRUSTED LOCATION Settings in FP Manager, NO JOY. Cannot uninstall the patch without my boss's ok. Any suggestions?

The issue returned on 15th December but not only did it affect the BBC website but also any embedded video content on the Guardian newspaper website. As I have automated updates for Windows 10 on I checked the installed updates. Despite the fact that I had uninstalled Adobe Flash player the security update for Adobe Flash player had been reinstalled. I uninstalled this update and rebooted but it didn't fix the problem. I uninstalled KB4054517 and KB4048955 rebooting each time and eventually found that the problem had again been resolved after KB4048955 had been uninstalled. I've checked today and the flash player security update has again been installed as has KB4044517 and KB4058043. The problem has not returned. However I am now getting the message in Windows 10 - Desktop Agent Tray has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.

Hi,

When setting up DSL (Digital Subscribers Line) connections to computer, you will need to use a program to update your installer. That program is called Desktop Tray Agent.

We suggest following these steps to resolve your issue:

  1. Press Windows key + R and type msconfig.
  2. Locate Startup tab.
  3. Select Open Task Manager.
  4. Go to Desktop Agent Tray and uncheck it.
  5. Press Apply, then OK.

Keep us in the loop with the result.
