System image backup problem: not enough space for shadow copy message.

Just updated Windows 8 to 8.1

I have 300 GB free space on my external hard drive.

System Image Backup predicts an image of 72 GB.

While setting up for backup, I get a "not enough space for shadow copy" message.

This worked fine under Win 8.

Suggestions, please.

I just updated too to Windows 8.1 and hit the same error.

Here is what I did to resolve the issue.....

Using a 2nd PC, shrink the System partition to create some unallocated space (2gb, for example).

Copy the Recovery partition to the new unallocated space. Rename the original Recovery partition to something else and hide it.

Once done, connect the System disk back to the original machine. Boot it up, and you should be able to save the system image.

For some reasons, 300MB of the Recovery partition is not big enough under Windows 8.1 for the System Image backup process . So as a work around, until Microsoft provides a resolution, figure out a way to expand the Recovery partition with more space to handle the System Image process. Exactly how much more space is required, I do not know. Making it a 2gb partition, I can now backup/restore system image with no issue. So I'm keeping the 2gb.

Good luck.

do you mean Shrink the C drive as the system partition-350mb  seems to be the issue, also, any chance you could detail the copy of the Recovery/system partition to the unallocated space... I only have this 1 laptop and no other PC...

Thankyou.

Actually I don't understand your explanations, so all I can do is waiting MS to release a solution.

Here is a solution from Microsoft support engineer

If you can call it a solution, I would prefer to call it a response..
