I am running Word for Mac 2011 14.1.0 latest installed update 14.2.3 on an iMac with OSX 10.7.4. My tool bar icons (above the ribbon) look strange.
One possible contributing factor, last week the 14.2.4 update failed. It downloaded, requested authentication, ran and reported it had failed. I have not tried running it again. Nor have I tried to download the update via my web browser. Since about that
time I have had
strange icons in my toolbar. For example the bold command icon is a large white question mark in a purple circle. The italic command is a tiny double up arrow and so on.
I have repaired permissions and verified the drive and restarted without effecting any change. How do I restore my standard toolbar icons?
I still have no idea what the cause of the problem is. All I know is that -- despite what one sees in the forums -- it's a relatively small number of users who are experiencing this, and that it seems to be more easily resolved for some than for others.
Unfortunately, you've fallen into the 'less easily resolved' group. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid a full removal & install seems to be all that's left.
It will speed up the process. Also [depending on your base install version] you should not have to apply more than 3 updates - 14.1.0 (SP1), 14.2.3 & 14.2.4 - even if your base happens to be 14.0.0 [more probably it's 14.1.0].
Your understanding of the recommended procedure seems to be accurate :-) but here is some additional explanation/information you may want to review:
