Release Preview: 14393.222 CU Available (and possible issue installing)

There is a new update for Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194496).

This brings you to build 14393.222. This is only available if you are an insider that has release preview.

Update October 6, 2016: Official Fix

Microsoft has issued an official script here that will fix this problem.  The previous workarounds are still listed below.

Previous Workaround Solutions

If it cannot install the update and rolls back (you'll see "undoing changes..." followed by another reboot), here are verified solutions:

  1. Bypass Windows Update by installing the latest version directly [Simple]
    Solution posted by Sean8102 on October 1st (page 16)
    Go to the Get Windows 10 webpage and click download tool now.  When you run the tool, select "Upgrade This PC Now" and choose to keep everything (files, apps, and settings).  This will apply the update directly without impacting any of your installed programs at all.  You can also use the tool to create a bootable USB stick and install from that, but no USB stick is necessary if you use the "Upgrade This PC Now" option.


  2. Remove Tasks and Registry for Tasks that that Block The Update [Advanced]
    Solution posted by TomislavRex on October 3rd (page 23 with additional details on page 29)
    Deleted all references to task  \Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTask in the System32 folder, AND all traces of them from the registry (in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache tree.  Noted that deleting some of these involved changing ownership of the keys. The tasks have been recreated during the installation of the update.

I have four computers which have undergone this update.  Two had no problems and two went into the fail and reboot cycle.  The "XblGameSave" fixed both of the problem updates.  All four are now running 4496 update just fine.  Kudos  to whoever figured out this problem.

Hi. Indy Ed the only problem I am having is I can't boot my computer. I can only boot into X:\windows\system32>. I tried to restore it, safemode Dism, sfc /scannow. Not sure were to go from here. And tried booting that Iso version,but I can't to an update just clean install.

Your best bet at this point is to do a clean install

and then rejoin Insiders.

Are you running the normal public build 14393 of Windows 10 version 1607?  If you boot with the 1607 install on USB, you can use SHIFT-F10 from the first screen of the install to get a Command Prompt. Try running chkdsk on your C: partition.  You could also try using Diskpart to format your System partition (for a UEFI PC with a GPT-initialized disk) and rebuild it with bcdboot to point to your Windows/Boot partition.

Still did not work!! - Now cannot restore the .reg backup I made of the delete reg..

What on earth is going on - is it because I am running an educational copy of windows?

Not happy Microsoft :-(

PS also ran the windows update diagnostic tool and although it fixs database ? still does not upgrade :-(

Use Diskpart - list volume to see the drive letter assigned to Windows partition, as this sometimes changes when booted from install media.

Also, sfc has offline switches for checking offline Windows and has to be pointed to the right volume.

Like other users I'm experiencing a boot issue. It started like this:

After update, HP Pavilion g6 laptop gave error about C++ Run time, which I had fixed in August by renaming Atibtmon.exe file, see

After the error came up yesterday 10/3, machine operated for a short time and then it went to black screen before atibtmon.exe fix could even be attempted again. Now it won't boot. Caps Lock key LED blinks twice, indicating BIOS corruption per HP LED codes, but BIOS restore procedure won't work.

Microsoft needs to respond to users with non-booting machines. The recurrence of the atibtmon.exe error after the update points to the boot failure as update related.
