Build 14986 - Error Code 80240031

***Edit:  2016.12.08 - 4:00pm PST***

There has been a great deal of research done on this.  As usual, Insiders have done some creative workarounds while trying to get past the error!  Good news:  the workaround is simple.  Run this troubleshooter!

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

This tool performs a number of actions which will get you back to a clean update state.  You will need an active internet connection to download this tool and to re-download build 14986 as needed.  Once the tool has completed, return to the Settings panel and re-scan for updates.  14986 should download as expected.

**NOTE**  In this thread and on a few websites, there have been recommendations to edit your registry and set two regkeys to zero.  While this may have helped for this particular build, it is important that you restore these regkeys back to their original value if you changed them.  This will impact your ability to receive future updates.  If you did not make any registry edits, no changes are required and you may skip this note.

Hello Insiders!

We released build 14986 today to the Fast ring and know you're excited to install and check it out.  It seems that some users are hitting an error code while the build is attempting to download:  80244031.

If you're hitting this while trying to install this new build, please share the following details:

  • Which language/country version are you using?  (Example:  EN-US for English/United States)
  • Which edition of Windows10 do you have installed?  Home/Pro/Enterprise
  • Is your machine x86 or x64?
  • If you restart your computer, does it display the same error again?

Should you have any additional details that would be helpful in our investigation, please share!

Thank you as always,
Jason

EN-US 64-bit Pro. Updating from Build 14971.

Update 1: Reboot did NOT resolve the issue. However, deleting contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads has at least forced it to start download again.

Update 2: Download again did NOT resolve the issue. Got an error Error 0x8024401f followed by the error 80244031. Can see that C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads DID get a new download "25fed0b50e411c492f2534985f43d82b" that weighs in at a whopping 0KB with 153 files.

Jason: "Is your machine x86 or x86?" I think you meant for one of those to be x64. :-)

I will check my Surface Book in about an hour.
