Xbox One X pulsating fans

Hi!

Just got my Xbox One X and installed Red Dead Redemption 2. I am pleasantly suprised with how quiet the console is but I have noticed one thing that annoys me a bit. Then fans seem to pulsate up and down very frequently, its not a constant fan noise, they seem to change their rpm up and down very often which makes the sound more annoying than if it would have been a more stable rpm.

Do all Xbox One X consoles do this and why? Found some other threads with people who also noticed this but some said its normal and some dont.

Mine doesn't do it often but once in a while if it has been used often it will the fan will spin at high speeds for a couple seconds to vent hot air and thats about it. is this what you are experiencing? All of my Xbox ones did this so it seems normal to me.

Best,

Nozzle :)

Thanks for the reply. Its not a loud noise its just that the fan rpm goes up and down so much that it makes it a bit annoying. You can hear a swoosh sound everytime it changes speed. Its perfectly normal in dashboard, but in Red dead redemption 2 its doing it all the time. If its intended I cant understand why they choose to have such a wonky fancurve

Mine does it too, it depends on the game as well. As long as you have good airflow around the Xbox, all should be well.

Yup! That swoosh sound is what I get too. No need to worry.

I never heard my fans really until RDR2, and yes, it does pulse the fans. I just turned up the game volume =)

I know at the beginning if you don't have automatic updates on or have it set to certain power saving options it will do this. Everyone I know has had this happen the first week or two until making some adjustments, then it seems to go away forever

Same swoosh sound here that happens intermittently. No issues.

Hi Jaxione!

I don't believe this is an error in your system. My (regular) Xbox One does this. I assume it has something to do with the amount of power it needs to perform the activity. For example, if you were using Spotify, it might be a slower RPM, but running Red Dead Redemption 2 would require a higher RPM to stay cool. I believe this is a normal function of your Xbox to save power and prevent overheating.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for all replies. Glad to hear it is normal :) I still think its strange though, why not make a more balanced fan curve?

Hi Jaxione,

I'm not an Xbox hardware engineer by any means, but based on experience the fan operates when it's needed. The fan usually comes on during game loads or other taxing functions to release hot air and keep the console cool. There is no fan curve or algorithm as to when the fan comes on, I believe it's mainly powered on when it's needed as said before when going into a graphics heavy game like RDR2.

Best Wishes,
Diego
