Windows 8 Error Message: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed

I woke up this morning to find this error message on my less than a month old HP Pavilion 23 All-In-One PC. I powered the system down, waited a few minutes and turned it on again, but it did not boot up correctly. I received a message that the drive was scanned but could not be repaired. It then asked me if I wanted to restore the computer from a previous point and I clicked on the restore button. Nothing happened. I waited about ten more minutes and decided to power down again since nothing was going on. I waited a few minutes again before turning it back on and when I did turn it on, the HP start up screen came on but nothing else. I left the system alone for about an hour and a half while I ran some errands and came back to a black screen. I then decided to power it down again. When I turned it on this time I got the HP start up screen along with a "scanning and repairing drive (c:)" message. Once this was completed, the system booted up and went to the normal Windows 8 startup screen but it was working very slowly. Internet, programs, etc all were loading very slowly if anything at all. I contemplated powering it down again but after a few minutes everything seemed to be working as normal. Programs were loading normally and at regular speed. Left for a few more hours and returned to another Windows 8 error message "No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." Again, I powered it down, waited, and the powered it back up to another "scanning and repairing drive (c:)" message. It again went through the whole stat up process but his time Windows seems to be running at normal speed.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with this computer?

Hi Ray,

This seems to be issue with hard drive or BIOS settings. I would suggest you to contact the computer manufacturer as it’s a new computer.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

My computer is doing the same thing and it also is a all in one HP product .I called HP support and since the computer was over a year old (purchased 1/28/13) the warranty was out so I feel as though I was talked into taking out tech support to find out what to do . Charged $ 49.99  and then a monthly fee of $ 14.95 to have them tell me that the hard drive may be failing . To take it to a shop and have hard drive replaced.  I believe this is a scam plus this is the second computer as the original had a USB problem so they replaced it . Like Purchased1/28/13  then 8/13 USB ports gone out  replaced it and now the hard drive is out . So now I am out of a computer and on the hook for monthly payments  for tech support on broken computer.

Sorry to hear about the issues you had with your HP. I had the same problems, but it was still under warranty at the time. Over the course of a month I spent time on the phone with HP running diagnostics on the HD. HP finally wanted me to send the PC back to them so they could fix the HD. They supposedly fixed it and returned it to me but it still had the same issues so I brought it back to Best Buy and replaced it with an Acer laptop that has served me well.
