Cumulative update (KB 3135173) fails to install, just like KB 3124262 and KB 3124263

Yet again the Cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64 systems (KB 3135173) failed to install, just like the previous cumulative updates KB 3124262 and KB 3124263.

After restart I get message "Woking on Updates 30% complete, Don't turn off your computer, with the circle of dots locked up".

After two hours like this I had to force a reboot to get on with my day.

I have previously tried all the suggestions offered by people on the community, nothing works.

Is there some way of stopping these Cumulative updates in the future, until Microsoft takes the trouble of finding out what is wrong with them and fixes the problem?

These updates are causing me, and many others, so much inconvenience and wasted time.

Oh to have this PC back as the reliable Windows 7 machine it once was!!

Hi Wil,

Thank you for posting in Community.

We understand your concern and we will provide the assistance required to help you resolve the issue.

Before we proceed, I would like you to provide the information stated below:

  • What troubleshooting steps did you perform to solve the issue?
  • Are you facing an issue with installing only Cumulative updates or other updates as well?

If you are facing the issue with only Cumulative updates, I would suggest that you try to download and install the update manually via Windows Catalog and check if you are able to successfully install the update in question. To know how to install via this website click on the link provided below

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/323166

I would like to inform that you cannot stop the automatic updates from downloading in your PC, you can however schedule it to notify you upon start.

Go to Settings > Update and security > Windows Update > Advanced Options. In the advanced options, select the option in the first setting: Notify to schedule restart

You'll be asked to schedule a restart to finish installing updates.

If you wish to remove the update, you can use the tool provided in the link below which can help you Hide/Block the update in question

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Hope this helps

Hi Vanessa

Thank you for getting back to me.

The problem is only with the cumulative updates, other updates install without a problem.

I had a lot of problems originally upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and also upgrading to version 1511.

I have tried SFC Scan. DISM Tools. UAC Consent.exe and various Trouble Shooters including Windows Update trouble Shooters. Non of these scans report a fault.

Each of the three cumulative updates are sitting in update history as waiting for a restart, but they are also included in the list of System App updates, however if I try to uninstall them from there, on restart, my PC also locks up at the 30% whilst trying to uninstall them.

I will have a look at your suggestion  to manually install, but given the system already thinks they are there I am not sure if that will work.

If you have tried everything do a repair upgrade that keeps everything and reinstalls windows.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

KB3135173 will not install on my Win 10 Home either.  First time in my experience that I have ever had any problem with any install of updates on any of my machines.

I am running Windows 10 on 9 different machines currently, and this is only one of two that is not running a Fast Ring Preview Version.  This is my "home" machine, and I am also running a release version at my office.  Both my office and home were on Version 1511, OS Build 10586.71).

Both machines are identical (I just built them both about 5 months ago).  I've never had any issues with either machine, and Updates have installed without incident prior to this.

My office computer ran the Cumulative Update just fine and it installed on 2/9/16.    Later that day, I came home and saw the same update was available on my home computer, awaiting a restart.  So I did the restart.....and it refused to install.   Windows begins the restart process and the Cumulative Update begins to install....First it gets to 35% and then reboots, and then restarts again, and the update reports it is installing 66%, 77%, then 88%....and then it balks,  and refuses to install any further.

Unlike others here, my system does not freeze. Instead, the screen immediately switches to a new statement:  "We couldn't install updates",  and it then proceeds to announce that it will "undo any changes made".   The computer then reboots in a seemingly normal fashion,  and when logged back into my account, everything works just as before.   And if the Cumulative Update isn't hidden (see below) Windows Update re-downloads the same KB3135173 Cumulative Update and the whole process starts all over again.

I have done this now (based on my update history) at least 7 times, with the same results each time.  I have tried doing a system restore to an earlier point, I've run the troubleshooter,  I've run Msert (the MS security scanner),  I've run Norton Power Eraser;  I've tried to install the Cumulative Update directly from the MS Update Download Center site (installing it manually); I've turned off all antivirus and malware protection and tried to install it.....Nothing works, and in short, I've tried every fix mentioned here on the forums.  It just will not install.

So I will remain stuck at 10596.71, and will wait until MS decides to put out a fix for KB3135173.

I see that several people have suggested that if all else fails, one should either do a reinstall of Win 10, or do a "Reset" (saving files and data)..... I am not going to do either one.  ....No way, no how.  I am not going to waste my time reinstalling apps, or reinstalling the entire OS.  I am not a guinea pig for MS.   So I'm just not gonna do it.

If MS wants to force updates, they can damn well fix them if they don't install.. And based on what I've been reading here and elsewhere, a lot of people are having the same or similar problem to the one I am experiencing.

For now, the only solution I can come up with is to hide Cumulative Update KB3135173 (using Windows ShowHide), and wait until MS either fixes this update, or comes out with the next Cumulative Update.

FIX THE DAMN OS and the UPDATES.....PLEASE.

I have this exact same problem! Running Windows 10 on 3 different machines, the update worked fine on two of them yet on my 'main' machine (all laptops) it fails to complete the update process and then reverts back and then tries again and then repeats itself (so annoying). The only difference on the 3 machines mainly is that the laptop failing to upgrade has a SSD whereas the others both have a HDD.

Please let me know if you find a solution ...

Thanks.

It's just so frustrating that Microsoft always offer the same solutions to the problems that never actually work!
