Windows 10 - "Windows can't setup a homegroup on this computer" Help!

I previously had Windows 8 on my desktop and Windows 7 Home Basic on my laptop. I updated both of them to Windows 10. The "Get the Windows 10" app didn't appear on my laptop so I went directly to the website to download it.

I tried using Homegroup since it worked well between the two of my devices before they were updated. It didn't work. I made a homegroup in my desktop and tried to join using my laptop. I typed the password then it told me that "Windows can't setup a homegroup on this computer."

I contacted Microsoft Contact Center and they have now handed me to Level 2 of technical support but they still couldn't fix the problem. They reinstalled Windows 10 to both computers. After that, I tried making a homegroup on my desktop and now even my desktop says Windows can't set up a homegroup on this computer.

I hope someone can help me with this.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forums.

I would suggest you to follow the methods given below and check.

Method 1. Run Home group trouble shooter

You may try Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services as a first step to diagnose and repair common home group  issues.

To run the trouble shooter follow the steps given below

  • Press Windows key+ X key, Select Control Panel.
  • Click on Troubleshooting, Click View All.
  • Click Home group and follow the instructions

If issue still persists try method 2.

Method 2:If running the troubleshooter doesn't solve the problem, refer to the following sections for info about the specific problem you're having.

Some of the common issues while joining HomeGroup are as follows:

  • You might have a Windows operating system that restricts your homegroup use.
  • You might not be connected to a network, or you might not be connected to the right network.
  • "Find devices and content" might be turned off.
  • Date and time might be incorrect.
  • Two or more PCs on the network might have the same name.
  • The other PCs in your homegroup might not be in the home, might have left the homegroup, or might be turned off, sleeping, or hibernating.

You can find the advanced steps and troubleshooting steps in this article to get more information regarding the issue. Refer the section 'I can't create, join, or use a homegroup'  in the article to see if that helps.

Note: The steps are also applicable for Windows 10.
