Cannot update win 8 64 bit to win 8.1 64 bit because my processor doesn't support compareexchange128?

So the question is then, will windows 8 still be supported with regular security updates etc?

When I say windows 8, I don't mean windows 8.1.

As obviously, a number of us are unable to upgrade from windows 8 to windows 8.1!

Do I need to revert back to windows 7 to ensure my operating system is safe and secure?

i have the same issue as the guys above.

i am Running Windows 8 Pro with Mediacenter perfectly. And I am not able to install this Windows 8.1 update. The Store says my CPU isnt supported. I also own an older Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop with an core 2 duo cpu, which is older. The Laptop was able to get the 8.1 upgrade.

First I was very upset, due the fact, I can install win8 and NOT the big update for it... In my opinion this is unacceptable for customers. I am around in IT since 20 years, suggested MS OS and their apps to friends, etc. I experienced many issues with Windows which killed my time, etc, I accepted it. But I never had an stopper like this. 8.0 -> 8.1 not possible sounds like a joke!!!!! MS, you are punching your customers into their face with this!! I would accept if a newer Version like Windows 9 couldn´t be installed due to a Hardware incombatibility, but not this way. 8.0 accepts and 8.1 not, its so ridiculous!

After two weeks of waiting, nothing changed, I realized, no one will help me, so I will try now to find an BIOS update or whatever.I had also thoughts about a Buggy store or an upgrade test tool issue. If I have some News, i will come back.

A sad Windows user

I am worried that my version of windows 8 64 bit is no longer supported now and won't get any future updates to make sure it is a secure operating system. Especially as a Microsoft rep is not confirming or denying this.

Therefore, I am going to downgrade back to windows 7 64 bit soon to be sure my operating system is still supported.

ok guys, after a hard fight, i managed it to get it work.

I am sure you are hot about the solution.

In my case the CPU is supporting all needed CPU functions!!!. But Microsofts store says it won´t.

With the CPUz tool you are also able to see the Motherboard Version and also the BIOS Version. Now I serached on the manufacturers Homepage (in my case Gigabyte) and found a newer BIOS for my Motherboard. In the history I saw also many writings about newer CPU models supported and so on, sounds like the key. My Version was from 2007 (F4) and I downloaded the newest Version from 2009 (F12) and installed it with the @BIOS-tool from Gigabyte. Restarted PC and Voilla now the Store offers me to upgrade to 8.1.

The thing is, MS is calling for some more functions of the CPU in Win8.1 as in Win8.0 in her setup checks. This results in many issues with People with older BIOS but newer CPU. Maybe this is not in every case the solution but in many i think.

dog-man, I advise you to double check your Motherboard Version and also Revision. Revision you will find on the Motherboard itself, ist printed on the Surface. and then go and search for the latest BIOS.

 I write this lines on the upgraded System. it worked for me, so I wanted to share with all of you tired People around.

I have already looked for a newer bios without success. My motherboard maker has ceased making motherboards (Abit), so it looks like there are no newer bios updates for me.

I shall look again though.

I have changed my bios. I am not confident it is in fact a newer version but it has now allowed me to be able to update to windows 8.1.

I shall be doing that shortly.

Sadly, after trying to upgrade to 8.1 around 10 times, I cannot.

It downloads, installs and reboots and hangs.

I have to reboot manually and it will revert to windows 8.

I always get this error: - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

I have done extensive research and followed all the advice by removing the NVidia driver, disabling anti virus, putting the computer in safe mode, removing everything except the keyboard and the mouse but still I cannot upgrade.

I see from my research that I am one of hundreds if not thousands who have the same fault.

I might try only once more if I get some newer advice but at the moment, downgrading to windows 7 looks good to me.

Microsoft have gone down the pan. I cannot believe they have released this mess.

I am very annoyed about this and it is quite possible that my next computer could be an apple. I never thought I would ever say that.

Are you by chance running a RAID in your computer?  I had the same issue,  so I did some poking around online and found that some people had this issue with the open beta and had to disconnect their RAIDs in order to get the install to work. 

Luckily I had recently moved my Windows installation from my RAID to an SSD so I was able to just unplug the drives in my RAID and sure enough the 8.1 update installed without a hitch.  I plugged them back in and after reassigning some drive letters everything worked fine. 

So if you have a RAID that isn't home to your Windows installation, and haven't already done so, maybe try unplugging it and give the 8.1 update another shot, if you haven't totally moved on by now that is.

I am running a raid box attached to my computer but this was not the problem for me.

I did manage eventually to upgrade to win 8.1.

My problem was that the ssd that I use as my boot drive had to have its firmware upgraded to the latest version, then it installed.

No messages ever telling me that this was the problem.

I just thought I would look to see if there was a newer firmware for the drive and there was, so I got lucky.

I didn't like win 8.1 though and went back down to win 8 via win 7 and am happy at the moment.

I might try win 8.1 again one day.
