Camera App Does Not Have The Panorama Feature?

The Windows 8.1 Camera App is supposed to have a Panorama feature built in. Here's a Microsoft video of the feature:

However, on my ThinkPad Tablet 2, which is running Windows 8.1 and the Camera App version 6.3.9600.16384, there is no sign of the feature. Where is it?

Answer

Hi Geoff,

I’m glad you’re excited about the new panorama feature and I’m sorry it isn’t current available on your Thinkpad 2.

Let me add a little bit more context here to try and fill in the gaps to answer your questions.

The panorama feature requires the following 3 conditions be met to be enabled in Windows 8.1:

1. Gyroscope/accelerometer sensors available

2. Rear camera available

3. The camera’s field of view (FoV) is known

The third requirement is the part where your ThinkPad 2 is getting hung up. New in 8.1 is an API that the camera driver can use to advertise it's "field of view" to provide this information to apps that require it (like Camera or other augmented reality scenarios).

However, today USB camera devices’ drivers are unable to report the FoV via the new API (and your ThinkPad 2’s cameras today are USB internally). We are working with device makers to get panorama lighting up on every device as soon as possible. There are a handful of these devices that already work and more will be lighting up over time.
