xbox changes directv resolution and enlarges picture on screen.

Why is this not answered?? I'm watching Directv through my Xbox One on a high end 65" plasma and the picture quality/resolution is TERRIBLE. For the past month I've been in denial hoping that a software update would fix it, or that maybe it was my Directv receiver at fault, but now after finally doing a minimal search on this subject, I'm seeing this is a genuine problem with Xbox One and nobody seems to have an answer. FIX THIS NOW, MICROSOFT...or get ready for some class action fun coming soon to a courtroom near you.

Do you have your DirecTV STB set to output 720p specifically?  It can't be set to output an assortment of resolutions, only 720p.  Once I did this, my image quality became perfect.

And I had issues, as I would have my DirecTV STB search for settings, and it would select all of them.  You have to set it, exit, and then go back to make sure that only 720p is selected.

The above links are for device specific info. DirecTV provides a number of different STB (sat box)'s. They are all different.

I am sorry to hear about the issue. To get a better idea of what is at play here, the following information is very useful.

1. Make & Model of STB (cable/sat box)

2. TV Provider

3. Layout (example: STB HDMI Xbox One HDMI TV) (please note splitters and hubs).

Why would I want to set my Direct TV to output at a lower resolution to my x1?  my tv handles 1060p why would i want to lower it?

To go off the rails a bit: It isn't how much horsepower the engine can produce, it is how much each component can handle. To get 700+ hp to the tires everything in that chain must be able to hold that much power (engine, driveline, trans, axles, hubs, bolts, etc etc etc..). Like electricity always finding the ground.

It isn't that the Xbox cant handle 1080, or the TV 1080... it is likely the STB is using "i" encoding (which at present the Xbox does not support). 1080p YES! 1080i No! This has been a long debated topic on these here forums: 1080i vs 720p. My choice will always be 720p, but to each their own....

So why doesn't the Xbox One support 1080i?  It seems to be causing all kinds of problems with STBs.  Microsoft should've known that pretty much all STBs output 1080i as the default and most TV stations broadcast in 1080i.  They heavily promoted the HDMI-in and TV app that works with STBs before the release of the Xbox One.  So 1080i should've been supported on day one, but it wasn't and now Microsoft appears to be doing absolutely nothing to fix it.

If you look on the Xbox feedback site 1080i support is one of the top requests.  Adding 1080i support would not only fix the STB problem, but it would fix a lot of other problems.  Like those with HDTVs that can only display 1080i or 480p that are forced to have the Xbox One display in a letterboxed, standard definition 640x480.  The Xbox One doesn't even function properly in 640x480.  The screen goes black when snapping apps and the big app tile is always black. 

When I purchased the Xbox One I expected it to display in widescreen HD and for its main features like snapping apps to function properly, but it hasn't and its been almost 9 months and these things haven't been fixed yet. 

So it seems like you're saying that the Xbox One not supporting 1080i is the problem, but its not going to be fixed, XB1R Hermes.  If this is the case, then can you tell those of us that want a refund, but can't return it to the retailer (because Microsoft waited until the retail return period expired to tell us that 1080i would not be supported) how we can get a refund from Microsoft?

When you say all kinds of problems, it really is one problem. It isn’t a host or variety of issues, it is one issue. Which is easily resolved by changing the output on the STB to 720p output.

You and I have spoken about this in great length and detail on other treads and it is perfectly ok that we disagree about i vs p. The example provided sways the equation it is not: 480 or 1080, the difference is 720p vs 1080i: Of which on AVR forums that has been heatedly debated for years…. Really years.

If or not support is coming for i won’t be released on these forums (there are official channels for this). Just because a feature has not been added within X time does not mean that it will not come. I do understand the frustration, really I do. The fact is things are changing, and although we may not get what we want within the first "few" months... does not mean that it won’t happen. The official request has traction and is being looked into. However, as previously stated the release or lack thereof will not be on the forums here, it will go through official channels.

It seems like more than just one problem.  There's the overscan/enlarged picture issue in this thread, in other threads there are complaints about degraded picture quality from STB to Xbox One like crushed blacks and in other threads there are complaints about the screen flickering or going blank when the STB is set to 1080i.  Then there's the people that just want 1080i, because they can tell that 720p is a downgrade as far as resolution or picture detail is concerned.  I know you have a different opinion, but there's a reason STBs output 1080i as a default and most TV stations broadcast in 1080i and that's because it provides a higher resolution that 720p while the interlaced motion blur isn't much of a problem since there's not much fast motion with most STB content.  And that's just issues with STBs.

I mentioned the problems it is causing with HDTVs that can only display 1080i or 480p.  So yes, in that case it IS 480p vs 1080i, because many of us have no choice but to display the Xbox One in SD 640x480.

The 1080i vs 720p debate shouldn't even matter at this point.  The Xbox feedback site should be enough evidence that many people prefer or need 1080i output.  You shouldn't force your or Microsoft's opinion on all these people. 

It has been way more than a "few" months.  And there was a post by support on these forums and I have been told through other official channels that "at this time there are no plans to add 1080i compatibility".

So yes, Microsoft has basically said that it will not happen, unless something has changed.  If it has, it would be nice if Microsoft could at least release a statement through those official channels that 1080i will be added in the future.  Otherwise, I'd like to know how to get a refund before the year warranty expires.
