I have a Gateway x86 Desktop 5310 running Windows XP Home Edition with Internet Explorer 8. I was running AutoRuns by Sysinternals.com to view Startup items with intent to removing unnecessary ones to speed up launch time.
I came across the Spy Sweeper entry listed below and unchecked it so it would not start and upon reboot, of course, the keyboard was dead. I went back, recheckmarked it, and verified that the keyboard was back in operation again.
I know that this is not the original keyboard driver for my machine. I vaguely remember having Spy Sweeper as an antivirus package but had long ago removed it and have gone to other things such as MBAM and SAS. I had thought that Spy Sweeper was completely cleaned from my machine. I tried going to the WebRoot.com site but could not locate a proper (legacy) support page to ask them about it. Please see the following:
(1) Reported per AutoRuns by sysinternals.com:
Under the Drivers tab find the HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services column heading:
Find a checked listing: SSKBFD -- Spy Sweeper Keyboard Filter Driver -- WebRoot Software/www.webroot.com
Folder location: C:\windows\system32\drivers\sskbfd.sys
(2) Reported per the Device Manager:
I have a "Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard" with a Microsoft driver version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp.080413-2108).
(3) Per the Driver File Details there are three listings:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\i8042prt.sys (Description: Port Driver 5.1.2600.5512 dated 08/04/2004)
C;\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\kbdclass.sys (Description: Keyboard Class Driver 5.1.2600.5512 dated 08/04/2004)

So the question is how do I get the original driver to start up on boot and then get rid of the Spy Sweeper driver that the registry is pointing to?
Is there a simple Regedit fix that can be done?
I won't do anything without directions.
